I don't think it's so much as the fact he had him in... Why does he have the 2nd best player on the team blocking for kicks is the question.

That's actually a better question. Of course, with Hernandez out, the other tight ends have been a revolving door, and I'm not sure any of them has had time to practice with the kicking team. Did you see that Visanthe Shianco played for the Pats on Sunday?

How does one break his arm blocking for an extra point? From the accounts that I read, Gronk didn't fall awkwardly. He never left his feet.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Last time I remember someone getting seriously injured on a kick it was one of the Gramatica brothers blowing out his knee celebrating. Rare occurance to say the least.

But what I wanna know is this:

In an extra point lineup, doesn't the guy outside the tackle have to be an eligible receiver, with an eligible receiver number like 87? You can't just put any fat guy in there, unless you go to all the grief of reporting as eligible.

And one of these days, maybe next year, maybe even in the playoffs, when all the DCs in the league are used to seeing Gronk line up to block for extra points, Mesko will take the snap, stand up, toss to Gronk and the Pats will have 2 instead of 1.

Wise are the ways of The Hoodie. Wise they are.

Guys play with casts on their arms. It would not surprise me one bit to see Gronk suit up and just come in to block on extra points.

What was the score when Gronkowski got hurt? If the game was a blowout he shouldn't have been in there.

The greatest risk on an extra point try in a blowout is that somebody will get through and take out either your kicker or your holder, who in this case is Mesko, the punter. You don't want that to happen.

Sounds like nothing more than a freak occcurence to me. I thought this comment from Peter King's MMQB was pretty interesting:

"Coaches have 45 active players each game. They don't have a "second team'' of the point-after-try unit. The PAT is one of the most risk-free plays in football. Rodney Harrison, the former Patriots safety now in the NBC studio with me on Sunday nights, didn't get taken off the kickoff team in routs. And Tony Dungy, who coached the Colts and Bucs, told me: "Jeff Saturday was my right guard on the PAT team, and I'd never think of taking him off. All my years in football, I never heard anyone, never heard Chuck Noll saying, 'Well, we better get Jack Ham off the PAT team.' It's not something I'd question."

Jimmy Johnson ALWAYS used his best players on special teams. He considered special teams play every bit as important as the other two facets of the game.


I really have no issue with Little Bill on this one.
