Can Yankees work a deal with playoff hero?

07:40 AM ET 11.20 | It wasn't all that long ago that Raul Ibanez authored one of the great storybook playoff seasons in recent memory. Ibanez hopes the fun will continue. The 40-year-old, a free agent, said he intends to keep playing and his first choice is to re-sign with the Yankees. "If I get an opportunity to play for the Yankees again," he said, "it would be fantastic." ... The Yankees have significant interest in retaining Ibanez -- he could help fill the void left by Nick Swisher in right field and contribute once again at designated hitter -- but they've asked Ibanez to hang tight while they resolve the situations with their starting pitchers and Mariano Rivera. "I know they have certain needs that they need to go after first," Ibanez said. "I'm open to anything."

The only place the Hero can play is in the Dh league because of his poor defense and age.

When I first saw the headline of this article I thought it was going to be about Nick Swisher:).

Raul played unconscious. But you can't fool Mother Nature in the post-steroid era, unless you have a really good chemist.

Raaaauuuuul!
He certainly had a very good year for us and rose to the challenge when our everyday left fielder went down with an injury. The fans enjoyed him.

They can't possibly be thinking about this guy playing more than a few games in the OF.If he's dying to come back and signs for cheap...well, why not? Easy to dump him then if he starts playing his age.

No kidding. Great, he ran into a couple of pitches in the playoffs. He's still 40 on a team that needs to get younger.

havig a veteran ph on the bench is fine-we do need to get younger...but no manager likes having a kid on the bench as your PH.I'm fine with him as the ph

Only problem with an old PH, is if he does get on base then you need to use another guy off your bench to run for him.

Good point. Plus, the Yankees already have other aging players that need to use the DH spot to rest. How many DH types can a team afford to carry?

OK, but he is light years faster than Texiera.

I would really like to see them give Dickerson an honest chance to play more. LH DH, OF. Girardi is one of the worst managers in all of MLB for using younger players. Nunez is a perfect example. He only plays old vets because it is the safe route to go.

nunez sucks in the field, thats why he doesn't playI am all for giving young guys a chance- but if you can't play the field as a 20 something...I mean, you don't belong in the majors

True. But he can hit. And just maybe if they played him on a more consistent basis, he would field better. I will never understand why they do not send him to an instructional league and teach him to play the OF.
