Applewhite may keep Simms away

As crazy as it sounds, Major Applewhite's return to Texas may ensure that Chris Simms won't be back in Austin anytime soon. Forever linked at UT, Applewhite and Simms are and always have been friendly. But Simms is reluctant to return to Austin, according to Rod Babers, one of Simms' closest friends. "Chris loved his time at Texas. He loves Austin. The city is a huge reason he chose UT. But some of the fans treated him horrible," Babers said. Babers was in Simms' Escalade with former Longhorns Bo Scaife and Montrell Flowers a few days after Texas' 14-3 loss to Oklahoma in 2001. Simms had been intercepted for a touchdown in the closing minutes of the game. They turned onto a street lined by UT fraternity houses when Simms' vehicle was pelted with cups of beer.

The fans may keep him away, but I doubt Major will. This is just the media playing back into the Chris/Major rivalry hype and it's disgusting. That was 7 years ago...let it go, already.

Chris Simms had a good career at Texas, but two losses to OU and a meltdown in the Big 12 Championship that would have sent UT to a national championship doomed him. I criticize Simms as much as anybody, but he handled the pressure and criticism like a man. He should realize fans in Austin are over it since we won a NC in the 2005 season. At least I hope they're over it.

Good point, Hova. This headline doesn't reflect the article's contaent at all. Media trying to resurrect a dead controversy between two friends.

media playing up headlines to get readers...that never happens on Fannation...

Who?

January 22, 2008  10:40 AM ET

It might have helped if, during their playingdays, the sidelines cameras didn't show Simms smirking every time Applewhite threw an interception or fumbled the ball.

Those sort of images tend to linger.

I don't think Simms was a whiner. UT fans are the whiners. (And yes, I'm from Austin.)

Ive lived in Austin my whole life and I'm ashamed of the idiots who treated one of our own like that. This guy was the number one ranked high school player in the Nation and decided to come to Texas and this is how he was treated. The guy could have gone to any school but came here.He was from freaking New Jersey! Most morons who don't know college football and where bandwagoners did not know how much more skilled he was than Applewhite. No offense to Applewhite but Simms never lost to New Mexico State or Stanford. The point is Applewhite lost more than Simms and Simms get trashed. Simms deserves respect for showing 5 star recruits its OK to come to Texas again. Im glad these FN idiots didn't hurt our chances of landing other QB's as far as recruiting is concerned

I gotta agree with Agrippa. I remember watching some of Chris' games on MSG Network when he played for Ramapo HS. He was a legit player and a legit talent. Phil begged him to go to Tennessee, but he said that he loved Texas.

Considering how much he loved the Longhorns, it is disgusting to think of the way he was and still is (according to articles like this) treated.

What a snippy little attempt to stir up trouble.

I almost feel like a housewife who just got a visit from the gossipy little next door neighbor and had to sit through a **** story about the two feuding women down the street.

Chip... Dude... I live in Austin. Some people like Simms, some people don't like Simms, but NOBODY cares a whit whether he comes back here or not. NOBODY. So, please, go write for "Us" magazine or ****.

January 23, 2008  05:23 PM ET

And what the heck does Simms have to to with Major's getting a coaching job at UT when Simms is actually playing in the NFL and Major was a loser and never made it to the big time.

Major Applebutter keeping Kid Sims away ? The Drama. Neither one is ready to run out and get the tees after the kickoffs because they don't belong on the sidelines.
