08:12 AM ET 11.21 | The Nationals added a pair of righty pitchers, reliever Erik Davis and starter Nathan Karns, to the 40-man roster on Tuesday night in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Davis and Karns, by virtue of being added to the 40-man roster, will be invitees to major league camp in spring training. The Nationals left a handful of players unprotected for the Rule 5 draft, notable among them outfielder Destin Hood, infielder Jeff Kobernus, left-handed pitcher Danny Rosenbaum and right-handed pitcher Rob Wort. Kobernus, one of the fastest players in the Nationals' minor league system, and Wort, who has little experience but a big arm, could be likely targets of other teams.

Rule 5 player is nothing more than a shot in the dark a team is taking on a player helping their team win and has to keep him on the roster all year or lose him.

Hopefully the Nationals only sign pitchers they are willing to use once playoffs are attained.

Even if they don't keep them on the roster all year, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll lose them. They only have to offer them back to the other team. I've seen a few get sent to the minors after the team worked out a trade instead of sending them back.
