Why Atlanta could be looking at Twins' Span

08:13 AM ET 11.21 | If the stat lines on free agent Michael Bourn and Denard Span aren't all that different, might a team be able to make a less painful deal work for the latter?. [The] biggest difference between the two players is the acquisition cost. For Bourn, it will be a sizable contract and a high draft pick. For Span, it will be an accomplished starting pitcher, plus his club-friendly deal -- two years, $11.25 million, plus a $9 million club option for 2015. The Twins might not get the package they want, considering that Josh Hamilton, B.J. Upton and Angel Pagan are among the other center fielders available. ... But if you're, say, the Braves -- a team relatively deep in starting pitching -- Span might represent a more logical play than one of the free agents.

Atlanta has lots of young pitching, and if they don't sign a big bat in free agency, then this could be a route to go. Shoot, Span might be a good answer to replace Bourn in CF and atop the lineup.
But if that deal's made, the Braves still need another OF, in my opinion.

Span and Upton would round out the outfield nicely.

Bourne won't cost Atlanta a draft pick, but he will likely cost more money than Span. The question for Atlanta is are you better off with Bourne and your pitcher or losing Bourne and a pitcher for Span?
I don't know if Atlanta can work with Boras well enough to get the job done, otherwise it is a no-brainer; pay a few more dollars and keep your pitcher.

I don't see the Braves opening the purse strings to much. They will probably do a trade versus signing a big named FA.
