Tiger criticized for being soft

After a month out of the public eye, Tiger Woods addressed the controversy that has swirled in the news media about the inappropriate racial remarks made three weeks ago by a Golf Channel anchor. "It was unfortunate," Woods said during a ceremony honoring his late father, Earl. "Kelly and I did speak. There was no ill intent. She regrets saying it and, in my eyes, it's all said and done." Woods has been criticized by some commentators and bloggers who believe he should have taken a harder line in response to Tilghman's joking reference to a practice that cost many African-Americans their lives in the years before and after the turn of the 20th century and to a subsequent Golfweek magazine cover depicting a large empty noose.

Woods is being soft on this issue. We know she's your friend, and that's great. But you owe it to African-Americans take a harder stand on this issue. You don't have to say she should be fired. But what she said was just wrong. And who cares if she feels bad about it? When you think of the word "lynching" the only thought that can come to your mind is African-Americans being hung. I know Tiger likes to be politcally correct, but this is one time he should stand up. Woods is willing to stand-up for his wife when those pictures came out,(which is fine) but what stand up for his race?

January 22, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Michael Jordan used to get criticized for the same thing. Not everyone can be, or has to be, a crusader. There were plenty of people more than willing to jump all over this woman so, rather than kick a friend when she was down, he showed his support. Being a good friend was consistent with his actions in defending his wife. He values the people close to him.

As far as GolfWek is concerned, I'm sure they will pay the price for their stupidity, though I give some them credit for canning the editor immediately.

Tiger handled that very professional which is to take the high road so you
dont give these gossiping people something to talk about. Your real fans
dont want to see the best golfer in the world go gangsta on that clown!
How come this generation dont know how to do that gracefully.

January 22, 2008  08:30 AM ET

And Michael Jordan should have been criticized. It's not about being a crusader. It's about understanding history. I'm not saying he has to go out and run for President, but he needs to take a stand. And if you're friend is wrong, you're friend is wrong. Does knowing someone make it ok to just brush it aside? The problem with Tiger is he brushes everything aside that has to do with race. There's no other meaning for lynching other than a racial hate crime. And I have no problem with him valuing the people close to him. But what about a whole race of people who look up to him? He has young African-Americans out there playing golf when they might not have.

January 22, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Take Woods out of the equation. Same statement said about any other white golfer, no one would've noticed it. There'd be no argument, this wouldn't even make news. But because she didn't think, and because Tiger is black, everyone assumes she's racist. When did lynch become only a black person word? It's in the dictionary as gang up on a person who has done no wrong. Now you want to talk about firing, the Golfweeks guy is an idiot. A noose, is completely different.

January 22, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Lets be honest here....Tiger could have easily placed the "race card" and we all now what that means. He handled it with class so let it go. I have a ton of respect and admiration for Tiger before this incident and even more afterwards.

Like I said, he could have easily played the race card and been on every talk show, etc like others we know (Rutgers basketball team, Sharpton, Jackson) Dont be annoyed at him because he did not follow in those steps.

January 22, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Yes, lynching isn't just a "black person word". But the historical meaning of the word in the United States refers to African-Americans. In the United States 80% of people who were lynched were African-American. And if you think otherwise you are blindy mistaken. People should be held accountable for their words and actions. And what I'm getting is (I could be wrong) , if Tiger would have said more he would have not been acting with class? Tiger can't stand up without showing class? I personally don't think she should be fired, but Tiger should have said more.

January 22, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Tiger does tend to button his lip in these matters a bit too much. He's a powerful guy. And it's about time people stop having these slips.

January 22, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Tiger Owes nobody.......

January 22, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Yes, Tiger does owe people. He owes the people who were lynched just so he could play golf and make all this money. He owes the people who died fighting just so he would have the right to be on the golf course and not just be a caddy. Now, if you consider those people "nobody", then I guess you're right.

January 22, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Yeah, Tiger's a real "****". He needs to start packing a pistol, father a few children out fo wedlock, curse out and threaten a couple waiters, parking valets, hotel desk clerks, etc. to prove he's a "down" brother and not trying to act white.

Tiger understood that Kelly simply used a stupendously bad choice of words, and he knew what she did was neither malicious or a "lynchable" offense.

I think Tiger needs to "man up" on this and tell all of you critics and those who want to dictate to him how he should act to kiss his ****!!

By the way, I'm black, and I'm neither a conservative nor a republican nor a member of the religious right.

January 22, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Tiger did the RIGHT thing in talking to her and understanding that her comments were CLEARLY not racial. HE has done the bigger thing in clarifying his standpoint and I believe he doesn't owe ANYONE anything. He turned the other cheek to an insensitive comment. I don't see the African American contingent representing Tiger's ASIAN culture? You just want to use Tiger as a tool! So typical of all races. Instead of trying to diversify and teach, you'd rather separate and redicule. I'm a minority and it's embarrassing to have my children ask me what was so wrong about what she said and this controversy. The fact is, she commented on how great he is and how the ONLY way to beat him is for him not to play. So instead of teaching someone, you people on the other hand want someone's job. So Sad that people can't get over issues and work on a future.

January 22, 2008  10:29 AM ET

If Tiger was to "man up" and tell someone to kiss his ****, it would be the first time he manned up. It's not about being a "brother" or anything that DapperDave said in his first stereotypical paragraph. And who wants to use Tiger as a tool? All I'm saying is, he has a platform that can reach many people and races. This was a chance for Tiger to open up dialouge about this subject. Not just brush it aside. Maybe you all don't know, but there's still nooses being hung up at high schools in todays society. You can't work on the future unless you acknowledge the past. And Tiger had a chance to open a conversation that would have been heard by all races. Maybe she didn't fully understand what she was saying. Fine. How many people out there don't understand the affect lynching had on America? Now would have been the time to open up dialouge about it. Just like someone said their children are asking about this controversy because they don't fully understand it. Brushing it aside is not going to help people understand it.

They also said Dr. Martin Luther King was soft and look at the difference he made. Whoever said Tiger is soft is ignorant just wants to fuel this even more.

January 22, 2008  11:17 AM ET

I think Tiger's probably trying to draw a distinction between a very badly worded joke, which this was, and an intentionally racist comment, which this certainly wasn't.

And if you don't know the difference, here it is...if she said it to his face in private, they'd have laughed about it.

Had it been a racial comment...someone screaming the "n-word" at him, or a commentator suggesting that blacks are somehow inferior golfers, etc. I'm sure he would have reacted differently, as would have been his right and responsibility.

January 22, 2008  11:21 AM ET

BTW, the fact that it was intended as a joke doesn't mean she shouldn't be punished. She, like Imus, took a fair amount of heat for a joke that got away from them. Anyone speaking in public should know better.

But to lump them in with people who make aggressively racist, hateful comments (or hang nooses on trees) is just ignorant. It's not the same thing. It's not even close to the same thing.

When you react to every statement you don't like with the same accusations of racism, it falls on deaf ears. It's the boy who cried "Wolf".

January 22, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Besides some cursing on the course, Tiger is generally a class act. Nobody is perfect. Of course, he did the right thing. The rednecks who think Tighman's comment was racial are not very perceptive.

January 22, 2008  11:47 AM ET

I think it's fair to say her joke was racially insensitive, obviously offensive to some.

I think it's ludicrous to call her a racist.

And I would hope we can all agree, at least, on that.

Remember Suprem Court Justics Clarence Thomas comments ??? This is nothing but a High Tech Lynching??? during his confirmation hearing of becomeing a Suprem Court Justics.

Hey Tiger this could have been one of your Father relatives, take comments and actions they are choose very seriously. Never forget:

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
