Baseball's version of the Herschel Walker trade

08:19 AM ET 11.22 | Jeffrey Loria has taken quite a bit of heat lately, generally as an underwhelming baseball man. Were Loria not some megalomaniacal charlatan, he already would've complemented the Marlins' latest salary dump with a move that makes far more baseball sense: trading Giancarlo Stanton, the power-hitting leviathan whose value never will be higher than it is right now. This has a chance to be baseball's version of the Herschel Walker trade. Teams are begging to give up a minivan full of young players for the 23-year-old Stanton. ... [After Miami's blockbuster], teams called Marlins executives and asked what it would take to get Stanton. The response, according to two sources who inquired: He's not available -- yet.

The problem will come if the team doesn't re-invest the money to field a good team.

the problem is,,,if loria don't excecute the right chemistry towards the marlins team,
there are several factors to take care of,,,
built a conssistant rotation/ built a tough lineup and add a tough lead off men at front in the lineup/get a leadership player in the team its a most,
should carlos zambrano turn the corner and excecute that command?? as a leader??
you never know and anything could really happen,,,,

this site went nuts,,,

giancarlo stanton would fit perfectly in angels uniform, should the marlins would like to trade him now or later? dont forget the halos, angels have a catcher to give away, plus peter bourjos should fit just right in the new marlins stadium,,,,,

November 22, 2012  11:41 AM ET

angels need a conssistent OF plus the halos still searching for a power hitter in the middle of their lineup, stanton has the right things for the angels lineup,,,

November 22, 2012  12:51 PM ET

Stanton will be a good fit on the south side.

Sure why not? He he he, but Toronto's GM would HV HB ha to work a little HF harder, perhaps he has to sweet the deal a little better?

November 22, 2012  03:28 PM ET

Stanton its not happy any more at Miami plus the fish lineup lacks in competitiveness, with a weak offense nobody likes to play with the fish any more,,

November 22, 2012  03:33 PM ET

The dodgers pulled a mega trade back in 1999, Boston did it late last season, Florida did it in
November, and got great players in return something where Boston lacked in their late
Mega trade,,:-)

This kid is an absolute beast. Every team out there would love to have him. He is the kind of player you give three or more top prospects to have. The odds of any of those prospects ever reaching his level of play are very slim.

Does anyone remember all those top prospects Detroit traded for Miguel Cabrera? Not really, the names are vaguely familiar.

I disagree. The Marlins sucked last year. They were going to suck this year, with or without Reyes and the others.Johnson is always hurt. Buerhle is on the wrong side of 30. Buck sucks. Bonifacio is a utility guy. Reyes is very good when he's on the field. But the Marlins finished in last in 2012, folks. This deal sheds payroll, allowing the Marlins to possibly build a winner. They got some good young players back in this deal. The problem will come if the team doesn't re-invest the money to field a good team.

As a business man, the Marlins move was pure genius. The guy convinced the city to finance a new stadium, and he signed talent that got him ticket sales and boxes sold.

Since they sucked, he dumped salary and now will make millions upon millions even with a ticket sales hit.

As a fan of MLB it sucks to see it happen.

The Marlins need to take a page from the Cards and Giants. Both have realistic payrolls and field winners year in and year out.
