08:12 AM ET 11.23 | Will free agent Mike Napoli remain in the AL West? If the Red Sox really are interested in signing [Napoli], they appear to have competition from the Seattle Mariners. According to an industry source, Napoli is scheduled to meet with the Mariners, who likely would utilize him primarily as a catcher. Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Jim Bowden reported Thursday via Twitter that the 31-year-old has received a three-year offer from the Red Sox but is seeking a four-year contract. Napoli, a longtime Red Sox killer dating back to his days with the Los Angeles Angels, figures to be most useful to the Sox as a first baseman. They already have three major league-caliber catchers, including recently signed backup David Ross.

I wouldn't sign a guy long term that usually will only give you 2/3 of a season.

Napoli's bat would play well in Boston, I think. The team might deal Salty if they sign Napoli, but who knows?
A few hitters such as Gomes and Napoli are okay, but the Sox need pitching. Make offers to Anibel Sanchez and Edwin Jackson, or trade for a couple of guys.

I cannot understand why the Sox want a catcher to play first base when you have LaRoche out there you can hit and play defense better than Napoli.

I can sort of see Napoli fitting with the Mariners, mostly as a part time 1B and DH. M's currently haven C Jesus Montero, who hits when he plays C, and doesn't hit when DHing, and C John Jaso, who caught Felix' perfect game. Jaso hits right handers well, but doesn't hit lefties at all. But they also have top prospect Zunio who is likely to be ready to play in the majors this year. Maybe they are thinking Napoli can and mentor the young catchers?

napoli would fit just right in the red sox lineup IF he avoid injuries and stay healthy the sox could get great prodution from napoli, plus napoli could be used as a DH firstbase catch at times and as a pinch hitter!!

the mariners are with one solo goal and idea in mind, trying to sign napoli as their catcher but there could be trouble in the long run, napoli tends to get often injuries just about in every season!!

i think if napoli learns how to avoid been injury too much, the mariners would get benefit from this player other than that the mariners could be gambling with the catching spot!!

LaRoche had a career year, and is unlikely to repeat it.
But, I agree with you on this one.

a three years deal is a fair amount in this contract all depends IF the contract has the right and fair price, sure napoli is a shaky and frangil as a glass cup, and then the guarantee from napoli in been a productive player is too light, either way the risk are there not to mention the demands in the hitting spot wont be a easy tassk to overcome!!

Possibly because they are looking to use one of their existing catchers as a trade chip and Napoli offers them flexibility by being able to cover them behind the dish in a pinch. Personally I'm not a big fan of this guy and wouldn't be disappointed to see him sign with the Mariners.
