Five times, both were in the top five. After five of those games, either Florida or Florida State went on to play for the national title. ... Rivalry Week is chock full of great games, including Michigan-Ohio State and a long list of intrastate matchups. But this game is poised to reclaim its place among the best. "This is like the old days," said third-year Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, a former offensive assistant to Nick Saban and Les Miles at LSU. The Gators already were counting it down last week against Jacksonville State.

There is a difference between a rivalry and a jealousy. Two traditional powers competing against each other (Celtics / Lakers; Ohio State / Michigan; Duke / UNC) are actual rivalry games. A lot of supposed rivalries are actually one traditionally dominant team versus a traditionally weaker team that is jealous of the other teams success.

You'll never convince those bucknuts and angry weasels that there are other rivalries anywhere and that some are even greater than that one.
Still say the RRSO is the best because they pause the brawls in downtown Dallas just long enough to play a football game.

Gators-Noles may not have the long history of some the other rivalries, but we're building a pretty good legacy of high-stakes games. This year just adds to it.

Well back in my younger crazy days I had a T-shirt just for two games a season. On the front it said OSU SUX and on the back it said BUT TEXAS SWALLOWS. Started more than one ruckus. Retired it long ago lol

I might be biased a bit... Civil War... Really, doesn't get much more rival-istic... Than war...
Of course, the only reason I won't be mocked incessantly for this opinion today is that most regular posters will still be enjoying a Tryptophan induced slumber...

The year before I moved to the Dallas area I think they had 900+ arrests that weekend.
Not sure if they still do, but the sidewalks are one way and if you make any attempt to turn around they will pull you off and arrest you....
It is definitely one crazy weekend....

I think the best rival games are played on the High School level, and they do not get have to shift conferences, even though some shift time to time from say 4A to 5A or to 3A or whatever, but they have the best year in and year out rival games IMO.

Very good point FAMU. But as a guy with a dog in the "Best Rivalry" fight I cannot disagree with the basic premise of the article. Ohio State/Michigan has not been much of a rivalry for the last decade. Hopefully Hoke can restore Michigan and make it a game again.

Colonel, yes the Florida/Florida State game is a great rivalry and "very" important this year, but IMO it is no more important than the USC/Notre Dame rivalry, also a very important game this year.
