Royals dangling top hitting prospect for starting pitcher

08:56 AM ET 11.24 | The Kansas City Royals are pushing hard to contend in 2013, considering almost every option to upgrade their pitching staff. And that includes trading the best hitting prospect in baseball. In their search for a top-of-the-rotation starter, the Royals have dangled outfielder Wil Myers, the consensus 2012 minor league player of the year, two sources told Yahoo! Sports. While the Royals have designated Myers off-limits for anything other than pitching, teams with frontline starters understand Kansas City is desperate to add another pitcher after re-signing Jeremy Guthrie and trading for Ervin Santana. With the returns of Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino from Tommy John surgery, plus the arrival of prospect Jake Odorizzi, an overhaul of the Royals' rotation could thrust them into contention in the AL Central -- especially with a pitcher like Tampa Bay's James Shields, whom the Royals covet at the top of the rotation but are loath to trade for because only two years remain on his deal and he has thrown the second-most regular-season innings of any pitcher the last two seasons.

The Royals have a good, young everyday core, but they have to have a top starter to set the rotation. Shields would be that guy.
If the Royals can sent Myers - who might be a stud - to Tampa for Shields, they need to do it.

The MLB proven for the unproven. Tough call. I would not do it if I am Tampa Bay. I smell Smoak.

Red Sox need starters too. Still... considering their greater need to retool/rebuild, might be a good idea.

Sarge, you consistently overrate Dickey's value. The same reason whyyou want to dump him is the same reason why teams are not willing to pay too steep a price for him. Dickey just had his career year. Looking ahead, he will come back to .500.

First off its not one year its been three straight solid years 200+ innings and a solid 3.20 era..you can't go by record because he's been on crap team....the fact that he won 20 with the Mets is more of a testament of how solid a pitcher he is right now.....he has a few good years left in him and Kansas City could do a lot worse than Dickey...even if he returns to a .500 pitcher that record won't be his fault...he keeps you game and gives you a chance to win ..what more could a team ask....
Worst case scenario for the Mets is they extend him and he'll anchor our staff for the next 3-years...we already had the 6th best starting pitching in MLB...Dickey,Harvey,Niese and Gee add 4 solid starters and we still have a guy name Santana who's gonna be our 5th starter this year.......

As a lifelong Royals fan, it's a friggin shame that we have to even talk about shipping off maybe our best hitting prospects EVER in the last 20 years! But despite all our top draft choices, we still have to trade for a front line starter cause we've failed to develop one ourselves other than Greinke. And for sure can't afford to just throw down the $$ for one. For our sake I hope they go for gold, can't fail on that trade. But if it doesn't work out, would like to have someone with a shot at 40 homers in a season for christ sake, which maybe Myers could do at some point.

lol, (Loses) Big Games James Shields is not the Ace any team is looking for. Shields is a distant 2nd in the Rays rotation and despite his nifty nickname struggles in the clutch. Neither are Lester or Buccholz good options; neither one of these guys have proved themselves as dominant through an entire season. The guy who suggested R.A. Dickey might be on to something.
Incidentally how much did the Rays pay you to post this malarkey?

You're looking up at the Nats. Braves and Phils and over-valuing what you have. If I were the Mets, I'd definitely pursue trading Dickey and hope that I find a patsy. This was his career year. His record will now regress to the norm.

If you would take RA Dickey over James Shields, you are either seven years old or on crack.

The Royals have to find more answers in their rotation. Shields could be the guy. I am a big believer that you always, and I mean always, trade prospects for proven, prime MLB talent. Shields has proven he is just that. The Royals prospects? Not so much.
That said, if the Royals could deal a hitter or two to pick up a few pitchers, it would benefit them. The AL Central is winnable next year. The wild card is up for grabs. No one expected the A's or the Orioles to win their divisions this year, but it happened.

The ROYALS should not trade Myers. Even with the recent pitching additions, they are in the low 70M's in salary. David Glass needs to extend and PAY for one more pitcher. Come on David, make the investment and it will pay for itself in attendance!
