Lane Kiffin's chaotic play-calling criticized

10:55 AM ET 11.25 | Eight snaps. In a bulging Coliseum that shook with roars and swayed with groans, one football season for two teams was defined in eight snaps. That's all it took. On a Saturday night when one team rose to the national championship game while the other blew into an outpost bowl like a sad tumbleweed, the difference between them could be found in eight snaps. The inspirational brilliance of Notre Dame, the utter chaos of USC, everything illuminated in a 22-13 Irish victory that could be described in those eight snaps. "We had a shot," Trojans Coach Lane Kiffin said late Saturday. But they missed that shot. Again. In particular, Kiffin missed that shot. Again. The coach who has enraged fans with his play-calling and game management unfurled more mind-bending strategy that turned this game on its ear hole during the fourth-quarter goal-line sequence found in those eight snaps.

No excuses from USC. Notre Dame won and they are going to the NCG. Good luck Irish. Now it's time to move on!!!!! :-)

Exactly. No problem at all with going for it there. Aside from that goal line fiasco by Lane (no way were we going to score running it at their D like that), I thought he got way too conservative in Q3. Wittek showed he was able to find receivers most of the night. Would have liked to see the ball in the air more during that time.

ICE, I totally agree!!! Doesn't USC have a good tight end??? Why not air the ball out more??? USC had "NOTHING" to lose in this game. They have Lee and Woods and a good tight end. Yes you're right, LK was way too "conservative"!!!!

Precisely. They needed two scores in limited time. TD & FG. When you are on the two that's your TD. You hope to get ball back and get within FG range. The three runs esp. 2 qb sneaks were not the way to go. A play action pass might have surprised.

They needed two scores. Tried 7 times and couldn't run it in. I was shocked they didn't take what they could get and then go for the onside, which they were going to have to do anyway. IMO they should've taken the points and tried again.

I'm kind of taking a liking to coach Kiffin,, 1-2 against the Irish,, he is doing just fine in my book, stay the course.

Disagree....I think they had a better shot with more space for lee to get open. They were getting shut down from that close in.

I could agree if USC had a chance to go to the NCG with a win over ND, but in this game, USC had nothing to lose and IMO they make the right call to go for a TD, it's just that LK made the wrong play calls.

Bend dont break is ND's defensive strength. So i see your point, more play action should have been the call though.

Van, actually the fullback was open on 4th down, he just didn't catch the ball.
