Auburn fires Gene Chizik despite player disapproval

06:56 AM ET 11.26 | The writing was on the wall pretty much from the start of this season for Auburn head coach Gene Chizik and the inevitable has happened. The Tigers have announced that they have fired Chizik after he turned in a 3-9 season that saw Auburn go 0-8 in the SEC, a season that ended with a 49-0 beat down at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Chizik is just two years removed from leading the Tigers to a trip to the National Championship victory over the Oregon Ducks. A lot of people can now justly credit that to Cam Newton and Newton alone, as in the two seasons after losing his quarterback to the NFL, Chizik went 11-14 with one bowl win against Virginia in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. The question now is where will Auburn go next? Since 1999 the Tigers have had only two coaches and with the lukewarm reaction Chizik's firing is getting from players, Auburn is walking a fine line in their new coaching search.

There was no player disapproval when Dooley was fired. The way they hugged Chaney and gave him a gatorade bath Saturday (which they never gave Dooley) tells you everything.

Who was the player . . . Cam Newton?

November 26, 2012  04:08 PM ET

As an LSU fan I am sorry to see Chizik go.

Fulmer's gonna have to start looking for work soon too. I think December is his last check from UTk.

But... but.... butt.... He coached his team to a national championship without paying a star player. He said so himself.

much like the entire SEC fanbase (outside of UTK) is sad to see Dooley go.

The "player" who disapproved of his firing was Cecil Newton, who has another relative on his way to auburn, pending Chizik okaying the check, playa.

Does the NCAA have a "show cause" penalty on Tressel?

Yeah Coach Saban also said in the conference call that Chizik is a fine coach and he hated to see him go.
