Boston's No. 1 target

08:18 AM ET 11.26 | Even if his fit makes for a question, Mike Napoli remains attractive to Boston. The Red Sox currently are carrying three catchers -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia, David Ross and Ryan Lavarnway -- though maybe not for long. Saltalamacchia was the starter last season. Ross will be "more than a backup but not a starter," sources say. And the Sox will not want Lavarnway to rot on the bench if he makes the Opening Day roster for the first time. The Sox could trade a catcher, probably Saltalamacchia. They could open with Lavarnway at Triple A. In any event, Napoli probably would be more of a first baseman than a catcher. ... Napoli, at the moment, appears to be the team's No. 1 target over outfielder/first baseman Nick Swisher.

Things are looking kind of lean this off season over there on Yawkey Way.

This article is full of ca ca. (That's a technical term.) Pitching is Boston's number 1 need. That must develop via organic or inorganic means.

Unbelieveable, I 'd rather have BJ Upton than Swisher. And I would also rather go with Ryan Lavarnway over giving Mike Napoli a contract they will regret by June.

They already tried organic. They played like crap last season.

I guess the Sox management doesn't get it that pitching and defense wins a whole lot of baseball games and they are short on both.

They needed a new pitching coach, and not a beer-and-chicken disciplinarian to satisfy the appetite of moronic New England sports writers. After a few months, they finally got it. By then it was too late.
You can have all the pitching talent in the world. But if 3/5 of your rotation goes under (2011) by mid-season due to bad management, well even Tito cannot fix that with smoke and mirrors. And all Bobby V did was show it wasn't Tito's fault.
But I probably preach to the choir.

Epstein wasn't let go, he bolted out of there. He saw the mess he created and was probably shocked another team still wanted him to run their whole baseball operation.
