08:15 AM ET 11.27 | Signing Eli Whiteside Monday certainly won't keep the Yankees from pursuing Russell Martin. Martin and the Yankees continue to talk, though several teams around the majors are courting the free agent. Martin's agent, Matt Colleran, confirmed that Martin has met with multiple clubs, though he wouldn't name any of them. The Mariners, Red Sox and Rangers have all been linked to Martin during the past few weeks. "We're in the process of meeting with other teams as we speak," Colleran said. "Until we finish that part, things won't move along." The 29-year-old catcher is believed to be seeking a three-year deal. ... [Whiteside] will likely compete with Chris Stewart, Francisco Cervelli and Austin Romine for the backup job.

Come Back To LA, Bro.

Catching is very thin these days. Someone will give him his 3 years I'll bet.

It was thin last year and he could not find another deal like that then. What has changed? A late season run is all that kept him above the Mendoza line.

Exactly. Unless he is cheap enough and can be traded during the contract.

Tough position to upgrade unless it's done internally. Their problem won't be at catcher next season. They'll continue to be a tough team to beat in the regular season regardless of who is catching, but the lineup needs tweaking. They are too reliant on the long ball at their home ballpark. Also if AP doesn't return they have a big hole in the rotation. CC, Kuroda and Phelps? Nova took a big step back in 2012 and Hughes has been in the bigs five seasons now....when does he realize his potential, his career ERA is around 4.30.

Thankfully they don't need to count on Hughes to be a #3 starter because espn posted a report stating pettite is likely to return for 2013 with an $11 million contract. I don't think a #3 starter with a career ERA of 4.39 ERA like Hughes owns makes for a very strong rotation.

Swisher leaving should help with that last part. The others like Cano and Granderson hitting around .100 are head scratchers, especially Cano.

Nova took a step back, which is not uncommon for a young pitcher. Verlander took a step back in his third full season by going 11-17 with a 4.84 ERA. He bounced back ok. Sometimes with young pitchers you have let them go through a tough year or two in order for them to mature and learn how to pitch.
Hughes' potential is a #3 starter in the AL. A 4.30 ERA is good enough for a #3 starter in the AL East. His biggest Achilles heel is the long ball. If he learns to add some sink to his fast ball he'll be fine.

How many starts can they really expect to get from Andy? I would think 15-20 would be about right. They need Hughs to step up, he's had more than enough chances.

I think Andy's still good for 28 to 35 starts if he doesn't get hit by any flying objects.

I think people need to stop dreaming that Hughes is still a potential front of the rotation guy. He's been in the league for 5 years now and it's clear that his ceiling is that of a very serviceable #3 starter. He actually had a pretty good season considering the disastrous April he had where he couldn't get anybody out. 16 wins and 190+ innings is more than you can ask for out of your #3 starter. He also pitched very well in the postseason before he got hurt. 2 ER in 9.2 innings.

I actually think it's a good thing if he only gives you 20 starts in the regular season because he'll be well rested and strong in the postseason. The biggest problem for older players is not so much the diminished skills, but the diminished stamina and recovery ability. They can still give you spurts of greatness. They just can no longer sustain it over the course of an entire season.

Martin is a great asset behind the plate but a major liability at the plate.........

I would sign him if I were The Yanks, he's done well with the pitching staff and is an asset on and off the field, he's heading to the darker side of the moon, but that's because he's durable and catches a lot of games, and he's only 29.

No way the 2013 Yankees make the playoffs without this guy. I think a 10yr/300 million dollar contract is in order.

wiseup: unless you have a plan B bite the bullet and sign Martin. who knows, maybe last year was a down and will bouce back this year. 10 years no way. may be 2 or 3 at most. If Martin refuses let him go. piezinski or Laird is still out there, unless I missed a signing. also Napoli.
