Flyers will make room for Forsberg

No matter how well the Flyers are playing, no matter how good the chemistry, and regardless of their standing, general manager Paul Holmgren said yesterday the Flyers would be interested in acquiring Peter Forsberg next month. If he is able, Forsberg likely will play for the Swedish national team in a four-day tournament beginning Feb. 7. If all goes well and he feels he can return, and if he wants to return to the Flyers, Holmgren and the Flyers will be happy to accommodate him.

I have no problem bringing back Peter Forsberg, but the chemistry this team is starting to build will come into question. They'll have to trade someone with a large chunk of salary (perhaps Derian Hatcher?) plus a younger player just to fit Forsberg into the cap structure....

If they do sign him I see Jeff Carter and Derian Hatcher being traded....Hatcher won't get much interest alone, so I think Holmgren would have to pair him up with someone to make such a deal....

The one bonus is that Hatcher goes and Kukkonen comes in to play. I think Kukkonen has been the forgotten man on this team. He's a very good young defenseman who has a knack for blocking alot of shots....

WHY CAN'T WE BEAT THE DEVILS!!!!

Do like me,phillymike, and hope we don,t face ,em in playoffs the way we,re going against them.I watched game last night, and it just seems we can,t step it up another notch against them.3 more chances at it .

i don't knwo why everyone thinks the flyers' have zero cap space. Homer has made it clear, time and again that we have 2.5 mil under the cap. enough to sign and injury prone superstar.

No GM in his right mind would take Hatcher's 3.5 million dollar salary for not only this year but next year too.

January 23, 2008  03:14 PM ET

bostongm... hatcher doesnt need an animal suit.. he already looks like a sloth... and orange and black is right.... we'll probably have to wait his contract out to get rid of his slow ****.... he was absolutley terrible in last nights game..

January 23, 2008  03:25 PM ET

in EVERY game, MadMIke, in every game...

January 23, 2008  03:28 PM ET

yeah basically...i cant wait until we can unload him

January 23, 2008  04:14 PM ET

It cost the Wings about $8 million to make him go away - though they weren't penalized for it because it was coming out of the lockout and teams had that grace period to get away with that then. I figure he'll cost the Flyers more. Likely a playoff series ths year (unless Stevens benches him, which doesn't seem likely), and he'll have another year of bringing that team down before he's gone. He might just be the worst player in the league right now - can anyone name someone worse? (skaters, not goalies - raycroft has that locked up, I think)

January 23, 2008  04:47 PM ET

worse than hatcher? sergei samsonov, in my opinion.

January 23, 2008  04:50 PM ET

How about Alexei zhitnik, (50gms, 1goal, 4assts, 5pts, -13)

January 23, 2008  04:56 PM ET

ooh, interesting choices - but isn't Samsonov playing acceptably well in Carolina? Or was that only a one week thing?

Zhitnik is a solid choice as well...but he has only been crap for this season, Hatcher is a lock to be terrible, and has been, year after year, for years.

Chara(7.5)

January 23, 2008  07:07 PM ET

gocanada
someone worse?
his parents that bore him.this guy rattles my chain, every game i see.

January 23, 2008  07:11 PM ET

Redden(6goals 22assts 28pts +12)
Chara(7goals 25assts 32pts +6)

If Redden is overpaid how is Chara not? As far as Hatcher and Rathje, I couldn't agree more.

i thought that Downie was trying to get his helmet off and that he was bloody before that - from a punch, but maybe i'm wrong.

January 24, 2008  12:49 AM ET

boston gm go away we dont want to read your crap anymore

January 24, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Downie got two good shots in on Clarkson before he tried pulling the helmet off....you could see it in the replay....Every player, when they're in a fight, tries to take the other player's helmet off....so they DON'T BREAK THEIR HAND. He scratched him as much as Hatcher hit the guy....NEVER HAPPENED....

January 24, 2008  09:47 AM ET

sorry meant to say as much as Hatcher bit the guy...
