Cubs interested in IF Jeff Keppinger

01:10 AM ET 11.28 | The Cubs are among three teams interested in infielder Jeff Keppinger prior to his leg break. Cubs fans may remember Keppinger as a bit of a thorn in Chicago's side during his time with the Reds and Astros. The infielder posted solid numbers with the Rays last season, including a .325 batting average/.367 OBP/9 HR/40 RBI. On defense, Keppinger split time between first, second and third base. He is noticeably better at the plate against left-handed hitters, but holds his own against right-handed pitchers as well. An easy comparison would be with recent ex-Cub Jeff Baker. Keppinger would be yet another option at third base if signed, considering Ian Stewart is struggling to over come injury and Josh Vitters is not ready for the Major Leagues yet. At the very least, Keppinger would provide depth as an infield super utility player.

Has the farm system been repaired yet? The Cubs new business model of "becoming creative" and holding the team together with spare parts is going to be a long and painful process

Cubs could do worse than this guy. Kepp is an underrated contributor. But if they think he'll drive in 90 runs, they're probably way off.

Keppinger is a very solid player, with the Reds he was very dependable ,good glove and bat, but there was jus no room for him on the infield and came expendable even as a backup it would have been tough to keep him, due to the guys coming up at the time from the farm system.

Yes he is, but he's basically a corner infielder with no power. He's a role player, not a starter. But he was great for the Rays last year.

It takes more than one season to rebuild a franchise. After former GM Bill Bavasi all but destroyed the Mariner franchise, it took 4 years for the farm to start producing again. In 2012 we started to see some of the young guys, but it was still a losing season. I expect the Mariners will be at least close to competitive in 2013, the 5th year AB (After Bavasi).
