Gruden gets Browns ownership stake with Vols job

01:45 AM ET 11.28 | Remember when Jon Gruden was involved in that bizarre trade from the Oakland Raiders to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002? Well, the man they call Chucky is doing it again when it comes to the strange and usual. As of the moment, Gruden has an offer on the table to become the next head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, and if he does, he'll get something massive in return that goes well beyond a fat payday. Should Gruden accept the head coaching job at Tennessee, new Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam (who's from Tennessee and is a huge Vols booster) is offering Gruden an ownership stake in the Browns. Talk about sweetening the deal. Gruden loves the NFL, and he's been itching to get back to coaching for a while now, but if he wasn't already going to return to the sidelines at the collegiate level, he's all but certain to now. However, the plan has more than one massive road block that could derail everything.

Yeah just like getting season tickets to the Browns as a Xmas gift = Coal from Santa!

He wants a call from Jerry Jones.

I actually figured that Ralph Wilson might go this route to get Bill Cowher to take over the Bills

Ownership in the Browns ....wow......think a free parking space would carry about as much clout as ownership in the lowly Browns.

November 29, 2012  08:28 AM ET

Kind of weird that the offer is not tied into coaching the Browns instead of the Vols. I guess Gruden is good enough for the new owner's alma mater but not good enough to coach his new NFL team?

any job that gets him off MNF would be excellent

If I'm a Tennessee player, should I be expecting the scowling (old) Gruden or the sunshine up everyone's a** (current) Gruden?

No argument here...however he makes seven figures working two to three days a week...22 weeks a year. Tough gig to duplicate. I think Gruden might be fat and happy.

Bring back Jaws...

Beats the hell out of the "Gruden QB Group Grope Club"

agreed, 100%. I cannot stand him. His "always in a good mood" routine comes across as beyond fake.
