Faith in Flacco flagging

08:03 AM ET 11.28 | Among a list of players who make fan bases nervous, Joe Flacco may lead the way. I never have trusted Flacco. Right now, it looks like I never will. Sure, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback played great against the New England Patriots in the AFC title game last season. ... But he's been very ordinary this year. There's likely a reason that the super-savvy Ravens organization has seemed reluctant to give a new deal to Flacco, even though he's set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2013. He hasn't taken his game -- or his team -- to the next level. Baltimore is 9-2. But who believes in the Ravens as a Super Bowl team? I don't. Flacco was average at best (completing 30 of 51 passes for 355 yards and one touchdown) in Sunday's squeaker.

Flacco was average at best (completing 30 of 51 passes for 355 yards and one touchdown) in Sunday's squeaker.
However 90% of the NFL QB's would take this "average" performance.

My faith in Flaco's failing,
Got a hound dog and a truck,
In Indy they are hailing,
Some quarterback named Luck.
My sister, wife and cousin,
Ran off with my best friend,
Got all the parts for this country song,
So I guess it's time to end.

In a tough division, no less. There are a lot of teams that will be interested if he's a UFA.

He just needs to do what the Giants do - get hot at the end of the season and in the playoffs. Even with his inconsistencies, he's still good enough to get the Ravens to the Super Bowl, but the other pieces have to be clicking, too.

This. And it wasn't Flacco that broke up the winning TD catch against NE in the championship game, either. He did his part.

I was about to defend the guy because I couldn't believe that his stats would show a middle-of-the-road QB... I was shocked to find out they are - every stat that matters is in the 14th-20th spot in the league - firmly in the middle of the pack. Everybody always tried to say Orton was a decent QB - that you don't need a great QB - just one that won't lose the game for you. Well, in this league, quite often you need a QB that can go out there and grab the win. Maybe Flacco isn't the guy. Nonetheless - if he goes UFA next year you can bet he's on the market for all of a few nanoseconds.

The new reality is that it is cheaper and safer to tag Flacco for two years and pay him the average of the top 5 at his position than it is to lay out one of those 6 year $89 million contracts with $40 million + of it guaranteed.
The cap goes up in 2014, not next year. They will tag him. Why sign him now? He is theirs for two years if they want him.

There's a whole lot of guys on that team that are more key to the Ravens' success than Flacco. Maybe with a better QB the Ravens could go further in the playoffs.

For some very good reasons.
When Flacco first came into the league I thought Pittsburgh was in trouble, because he looked like he was going to be a first rate QB. He's had flashes of brilliance, but he always seems to gravitate towards mediocrity.

One more injury and you'll see Brian Hoyer playing in a non-garbage-time game for the first time in his career.
