03:46 PM ET 11.28 | San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh named Colin Kaepernick the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. This will make for Kaepernick's third straight start since Alex Smith was sidelined with a concussion in Week 10 against the Rams. Harbaugh declared Kaepernick the starter for Week 13 but did not confirm whether or not this would be a week-to-week decision. But it's pretty clear at this point that Smith is being phased out.

Smith is handling his demotion well. Like a real pro. His teamates are appreciative and impressed with his take one for the team attitude, as they atomic wedgie him and brush him to the side.

Harbaugh knows what he has in Alex Smith. He must believe that Kaepernick provides more of an upside at the position.

I believe I'll see Smith in the playoffs when the rookie gets shaky.

Which is exactly what Alex Smith did. I hope this winds up biting Harbaugh in the arse. Smith deserves to play somewhere where he is appreciated and Harbaugh deserves to be bitten in the arse. Over and over and over again.

You don't think it's all about winning? They didn't draft Kaepernick to have him spend his whole career on the bench.
In this league this year, you pretty much have to understand that you're one play away from losing your starting quarterback. The Niners are going to the playoffs, and getting there with two healthy quarterbacks, both of who are genuine starters, is what could get them to the big game
Take a look at Pittsburgh for an example of what could happen to most teams.

Kaepernick is the future, I just hope they dont sacrifice this year for the future. They cant put him back on the bench now after a bad game. The team is good enough to win a SB or it will be a waste.

Smith played terrible against the Giants because the gameplan was to use the Wildcat on every possession, or so it seemed. On a couple of those drives, the team would get some yardage on 1st down, they'd put Kaep in on 2nd, he'd lost 3 or 4 yrds, and then Smith would be working with the odds against him on a 3rd and long. I think the team is doing Smith wrong, but as a Niner fan, I love the offense with Kaep in. I think it's sending the wrong message to your team when you take someone out who was performing as well as Smith was, gets hurt, and does't still have his job when he gets healthy.

Isn't it ironic, Alex Smith has one and a half semi decent seasons (one would expect that from a former number one overall pick) and people climb to his defense when a young gun with potential to truly elevate that team takes over. Yet in the same breath Vick has one and a half bad seasons and everyone calls for his head on a platter and to start a rookie (he cant perform behind that line either as you saw) who has nowhere near the potential Kap does. Amazing......
