Bullingy Jacobs personally responsible for lockout

08:17 AM ET 11.29 | Though Winnipeg has since denied the exchange took place, the story created headlines. [Jets] representation at a recent NHL Board of Governors meeting piped up to say it was opposed to engaging in a long, bloody lockout sure to stymie their franchise's momentum and hurt the game of hockey. ... [Jeremy Jacobs] answered by reprimanding the Winnipeg representative as one of the "new kids on the block" and informed him that he would know when he was allowed to speak in the NHL board room. That's the kind of hawkish, dismissive, bully mentality that's driving the bus for the NHL lockout that's now cancelled games through the middle of December. It's also the reason why Bruins fans should hold Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs personally responsible.

Bullingy? That's a word?

Anyway, nice job Jeremy, talking down to representatives of one of the wealthiest men in the world. Sorry to piss everybody off, but this right here is one of the main reasons Americans are ruining this game.

Not sure I would throw the entire country under the bus for one guy's comments.

If by ruining the game meaning the last 18 Stanley Cup champs came from your southern neighbor, then guilty as charged

Besides Calgary, MAYBE, I don't think there's a single struggling Canadian franchise, and one in the states owned by a Canadian is doing quite well judging by his new $20 mil castle in Quebec. The league leadership is American, the majority of owners are American, and from what it looks like all of them except Dolan and maybe Snider want to keep the lockout going until my children grow old.

Paying Canadians does wonders for you yanks. Hell, if NBC bought Canadian viewership rights NHL ratings there might even be respectable!

NHL minus us mean old Americans = CFL. It's funny when the Canadian teams were struggling and small market didn't hear many Canadians whining. Now they thump their chest out. Forgetting recent past. And I'm confused when the league started were the original 6 all Canadian?

Calgary has boatloads of Oil money in its ownership Danny, as well as a long waiting list of Lemmings. wanting to help sell out the Dome of mediocrity on a regular basis. Calgary struggles on the ice not at the Bank.

Alright then. But if the Leafs and Habs ALONE make up more than 50% of the league's income as the other thread says, wouldn't an American pro hockey circuit independent of the Canadian teams probably wind up being the CFL of the hockey world, whereas the Canadian teams would be the NFL?

I thought I remembered hearing they didn't turn a profit last year. Either way, it's not like the Flames are on the verge of extinction. But I can name ten franchises that are close, and none of them have postal codes.

Big Oil Ownership also allows for hiring of "helpful " tax accountants

Lets say all American teams leave. You will have a 6 team league where 2 teams will financially dominate the rest. I'm pretty sure the Perry Sound Ponies won't be able to compete with the Habs.

The thing about the NFL and its value is that so many people are invested because of the notion that each team has a chance to win and that's because of revenue sharing.

Why would anyone want an NHL without USA Teams ? Move a few Southern ones northward , contract a few more , and away we go. No USA teams = no NHL

You're kidding, right?

Almost every year the same teams don't have a hope in hell.

Disagree. NHL would survive.

But I'm not against all US cities.

Just don't see the need for at least 6 of them.

7, currently, and realistically you could add 5 more and see them operate with a profit with a 50-50 split of HRR. And i'm sure the Halifax Harbingers would do just fine in such a system.

I'll readily admit that when the Canadian dollar was worthless, most Canadian teams were on the verge of collapsing, and that the moving of the Jets and Nords was pretty much unavoidable given the circumstances surrounding ownership and buildings. But as player wages rose, and as the Canadian dollar recovered value, the economics of the day show pretty clearly where hockey is successful and where it isn't. And hockey is failing in more than half of the American markets it is currently servicing.

And, for the record, I have no doubt that the Perry Sound Ponies would sell out an arena the size of The Rock for a Stanley Cup Final game in ten minutes, as opposed to having tickets available hours before puck drop like they do in North Jerz.

Good point indeed and I agree with you. I would relocate two of the teams to Quebec and Hamilton and two to Seattle and Portland as Otis suggested. Not sure the NHLPA is ready to agree to contraction just yet, but the relocation of at least 4 teams to those cities would help IMO. No question that Canada lives and breathes hockey as a nation and the US is only strong regionally. Without a significant presence however the league would be significantly smaller, weaker in the sense of media, merchandising and ticket revenue. Who knows, Toronto might then have $36.00 beer? And, the number of jobs for those talented Canadian kids (as well as a growing number of Americans) would be greatly reduced. And, as you said Harry, talented accountants can make the league financially stronger too! :-)

Not saying that at all. I'm saying a few Yankee dirkwads are holding up the game from the owners' side. Therefore technically, at the moment, Americans are ruining the game.

Same goes for the Fehrsome twosome.

Jacobs has proven time and again to be not much better than a bully, So this comes as no shock to me, even if it is only rumour and conjecture. Whether or not he is American is beside the point, although being an owner with nothing better than dictatorial tendencies is the point directly. If the other owners are suffering at the whims of this cashed up misanthrope as suggested, why isn't he deposed by the others governors? Do they really lack that much of a spine? I would be inclined to say that they indeed have no real spine, but that's also because they also don't want to be seen as being the hatchet-man, and while I dislike Jacobs intensely (not for his wealth, but his attitude), he's stuck being hawkish, because the rest of the leadership are a bunch of jellybrains, if any of this is to be believed.

With that I take a big helping of salt to wash all this down with.
