Tiger's effect on TV ratings
Tiger Woods' presence at a tournament ensures that event's success, and some believe his absence causes immeasurable damage. It all starts with Tiger and television. The ratings tell a story that begins and ends with Woods. According to research that traced Woods' effect on television ratings in 2007, tournaments in which he finished in the top five had a 171% increase in CBS' ratings over those in which he did not play or wasn't in contention. The ratings were 4.6 compared with 1.7. In similar tournaments on NBC, the ratings increase was 59%, or 3.5 compared with 2.2. The two-network average showed an increase of 111%, or 4.0 compared with 1.9. Rob Correa, senior vice president of programming for CBS Sports, said Woods' influence on ratings is at least equal to any of the greatest figures in sports.

More cutting edge news, BY PASSING ON MINOR TOURNAMENTS AND FOCUSING ON THOSE WE TEND TO WATCH MORE IT DISTORTS THE TOTAL COMPARISON A BIT.
Last weeks round 5 of the Bob Hope was outstanding golf. At least Tiger leaves some crumbs for the rest of the pack.

WOW!!! The ratings go up when Tiger is in contention. The journalist who wrote this story should get a Pulitzer!

Gee, and I thought people watched for the love of the game. Obviously I don't have a lot of company in thinking that the media pushes Eldridge on us too much. I don't watch a ton of golf, but I can't stand the amount of time devoted to a single golfer. Their are plenty of guys that hit amazing shots that the viewer won't see because of the fauning all over Woods. No arguments about him being a great player, but shut up already. Also, for any true fan of any game, they watch, not only when their favorite is winning. I could care less who is playing in the World Series, if I'm a fan, I watch. Sure you'd prefer it's your team and all, but if you don't watch because they aren't their the you are not a fan of the game. And as a fan of many sports, I have never thought some game or series was better because I knew the games ratings would be this or that. Put this in the business page, it has nothing to do with sports.

The OTHER players on the tour are glad when Tiger doesn't come to play. It gives them a chance to contend.
And while he doesn't (and shouldn't) wine every tourney he enters, his presence seems to result in meltdowns by some of the contenders.
Sure, Tiger has an effect on the ratings. Who doesn't want to be able to say that they WATCHED golfing history being made? His run is amazing, and, unlike Bigdogg, I think it is the result of talent rather than HGH.
