Stern overstepping his bounds

08:10 AM ET 11.30 | When it came to Gregg Popovich's lineup Thursday, David Stern took a strong stance. [Stern] said he wanted to "apologize to all NBA fans," and that was a start. Someone needed to be contrite about a schedule that matched the most rested vs. the most tired for a national television audience. ... Stern can't tell Popovich who to play and when to play them, anymore than he can dictate minutes. That's why the league has allowed Popovich to do this in the past. But Thursday was different for Stern. This was TNT, with the defending champs, with a game that had been advertised as a potential Finals matchup. This is the kind of marketing night that Stern built his empire on, and there was Popovich ... undercutting the selling of LeBron.

I totally agree 100% with Pops on this. David Stern is a pompus and complete dictorial moron. A 10 game road trip, followed up by a 6 game road trip with a back end of the Heat, then followed up by Memphis. Exactly what was this moron looking for...a blowout by the Heat on National TV? By the way the only won by five with Pops Stars being rested...F Strern!

Once again the NBA has shown us that the regular season only matters to teams trying to prove themselves. Top tier teams coast and teams that suck just go through the motions. With that said I still will be at a bunch of games this season lol

"Someone needed to be contrite about a schedule that matched the most rested vs. the most tired for a national television audience.."
Exactly. The league penciled in the Spurs for a guaranteed loss, so Pop Eurostepped Stern (and the Spurs nearly won!). Coach needs to do what is in the best interest of the team and sometimes this means all the stars aren't on the floor.

Hey GB. Yeah, what would Stern have done if the Spurs had won? It's bad enough the game was so close, but sanctions for winning? Too much.

The best call Stern made this year is the one where he told us he was going to retire. Clearly he's ready.

I think this could potentially be a very dangerous precedent to set. My fear is this could be a first step where the league is indicating to an organization which players it has to play in which games.

Agreed. This is complete BS. It's the Spurs team, Popovich is the coach and he should be able to play whoever the hell he wants. If his boss doesn't have a problem with it, Stern should butt the heck out. The Spurs should do what they think is best for their team within the rules, as should every team.

Better yet how many minutes each player gets and who has to be on the floor during commerical breaks. Stern's went a bit too far by making his displeasure at Pop's strategy public. Now he has to act and he's going to look real dumb. His imminent retirement is two years too late. He's become more of harm than good to the league lately. He's clearly out of touch for with today's reality...

Pops is right...
It is silly to have an older team travelling so much to face a rested Heat team.
As a Heat fan it sucked to see and hear this...on the other hand, even though the Heat barely won, Pops looks like a genius because I bet you the bench played Miami better than the veteran Spurs players would have.
There is an element of "let down" with Heat players when they heard about those players being sent home and there is another element of excitement the bench players had to play vs the champs.
If Stern fines Pops, I would sue the NBA silly if I were him.

Stern fell asleep at the wheel on this issue. This has been going on for a few years now. If he didn't like it then it should have been addressed during the off season with an actual rule in place. Not that I'm for a new rule on this. But he can't now in the middle of the season start griping and threatening penalties. The Spurs broke no league rules. So what if those 4 players dressed and sat the bench all night? Is that still not acceptable? Is he going to start dictating mimimum number of minutes per superstar? Baseball and Football has been doing this for years.
