Will Safeco's friendlier fences lure free agents?

08:14 AM ET 11.30 | Among the benefits Seattle cited when announcing that it would move in the fences at Safeco Field: Making the Mariners a stronger candidate for free agents. Let's face it -- the Mariners haven't had a lot to offer free agents in recent years, particularly hitters. They've been non-contenders, for the most part, and Safeco has earned a warranted reputation as Death Valley for sluggers. ... But one agent added, "At the end of the day, if the Mariners were going to pay the highest contract, their fences could be in Everett. When there are competitive bids, the player is going to look at those factors. I think moving in the fences does make Seattle more appealing for bats, power guys."

Yes, but Griffey and ARod left when the team moved to Safeco--it was too difficult a park to hit in. Edgar Martinez stayed on, and continued to hit well, because he was a line-drive hitter with power to both power alleys. He didn't try to pull everything, and he didn't hit the high fly balls that don't carry well in Safeco.

Mariners need offense. Hamilton makes sense. Napoli, not so much. I think the M's need to pick up a couple more guys, hitters that are gap guys. Melky would have made sense. LaRoche perhaps. Victorino, yes.

I think you are on the right track. I like Melky except for the steroid taint; Mariners had one kid (Mike Morse I think it was) who got caught in the minors, and they gave him a second chance. Second time he got caught though they washed their hands of him, so I don't think they will touch Melky.
