08:20 AM ET 11.30 | As the coaching carousel picks up speed, Chris Petersen's name will likely come up in speculation. [Petersen] has earned a one-year extension because the Broncos won eight games. That puts him under contract through 2017. He will receive an $80,000 bonus if the Broncos win this week (conference title) or a $35,000 bonus if they lose (bowl berth). His buyout is $750,000. He is obligated to coach the Broncos through the bowl game even if he accepts another job. As schools line up to fight over the latest hot head coaches in college football, they might do better to chase assistants. Of the 25 coaches in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings, 15 have not been head coaches at another college or in the NFL.

Depending on inflection, this could be taken totally out of context.

How can you be Contractually obligated to coach a bowl game? Aren't you Contractually obligated to coach the next YEAR? I would think the buyout would get him out of a bowl coaching obligation.

Otherwise, 46 consecutive fullback dives might be a good way to coach your last game. IMO, you don't want him or any other coach to lead your team in a bowl if htey have already divorced.

Maybe smoke-screen to get folks off the trail? Wishful thinking for the fans?

FWIW, a $750,000 buyout = 7 weeks of salary if your new salary is $5.5 mill per year....

Just sayin......

Speculating about Petersen makes good press. I do not see his disposition or motives revealed by any report to date. I think he's happy in Boise and temptation for him is very limited.

I often wonder why people have a hard time understanding that someone is content with 2-3 million a year at their current location. Everyone seems to think a person should always chase additional $$$$$ and it should be the only factor.

Lets do some math:

After tax yield (depending on state taxes and structure) for $3 mill a year = @ $4,600 a day take-home. $5.5 million a year raises that take-home to @ $8,450.

Coaches tenure is limited and there is no loyality on either side (see Chizik). Why would you not maximize your earnings and make an extra $27,000 a week, $115,500 a month, $1,386,000 a year in TAKE HOME pay??

You really think an extra $115k a month wouldn't improve your quality of life and effect what you could do for your family & thier lives after you are gone?

If quality of life it totally dependent on money due to insatiable wants, then yes, a person should pursue the $$$$.

But, have you ever talked to investment guys about fortunes handed down to offspring? Seems it doesn't work out too well most of the time. The ones that earned it tend to pizzzsss it away.

Saw an interview with Bill Gates. Said he was only leaving his kids something like $2 mil cuz he wanted them to make their own way. But, 2 mil as a cushion is pretty good.

That's because, for most people, $$$ is the only factor that matters.

Yeah, I see a lot of transfer of wealth to other generations.....sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I would hope I could raise my kids to be successful in this area. I've seen kids around here that have inherited Billions and still have a work ethic......

My point, your retirement, your financial legacy, your ability to support charities, your ability to travel anywhere, anyhow, anytime.....that extra 7-figures a year in discretionary income is a game-changer

If those things are necessary in a person's definition of quality of life, then absolutely a person should take the money and run.

My best friend lived in Alaska for years. His wife worked with the villages and burroughs and complained because a large part of the population had, in her words, "no ambition and only wanted to hunt and fish." No desire for progress...least that met her definition.

He reminded her that they had a lot of "wealthy" people pay $20,000+ each for hunting or fishing expeditions to Alaska. He said, "all those only want to hunt and fish too."

To each is own, no doubt. Those who are truely happy with their lots in life and feel content, they are special.

If Peterson is one of these people, then BSU is lucky to have him. He is a rare breed, esp for a CFB coach.

Agree. That was my point to start with. It seems many can't understand that not everyone always wants more and more and more...or needs it to feel successful.

That said, people such as Petersen and Patterson are still very comfortable financially...at least when compared to the normal person.

$80K ??? Are you kidding me??? That's donut money in the SEC. That won't even get you an appointment with Cecil Newton.

I bet Tennessee and Auburn wish they had $750k buyouts on their losers. Even Joker had a $2mil+ buyout.

One of the other reasons that he stays in Broncoland is due to the health of his kid. Resperatory issues IRC.
