Will Rangers sign a catcher?

09:14 AM ET 12.01 | The Rangers have one less catcher. For now. When it became apparent a deal with Geovany Soto could not be reached by Friday's 11 p.m. CT deadline, the Rangers opted not to tender him a qualifying 2013 contract that would put him in line for a possible raise through the arbitration process. It makes him a free agent, though the Rangers can continue to negotiate with him. The Rangers are still hopeful of bringing back Soto, but did not think his .199 batting average and .631 OPS in a season split between the Chicago Cubs and Rangers merited a raise off his $4.3 million salary in 2012. The Rangers currently don't have a catcher with any significant major league experience on their 40-man roster. Mike Napoli is a free agent.

Soto did nothing to earn a contract. The Rangers have offense, and need to focus on a defensive catcher.

Soto would be a good back-up for the Rangers, but the tender has to be 13.3 million this year, and he isn't worth that. So they are negotiating the size of his paycheck, and he gets to see what other teams think he is worth.
He had a couple of really bad months this year, but he generally hits between 220 and 280, with about 15 HR in 100 games caught. He's a decent contributor, but not a 13.3 million dollar per year guy.

The Sox are eager to trade, so there is your catcher and resign Soto to the minimum as a backup.
