04:31 PM ET 12.01 | The NFL has issued a brief statement on the murder-suicide tragedy involving Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher. The league stated that it has been in contact with the Chiefs organization, and that it will provide assistance via the league's professional counselors. The statement, via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Chiefs and the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy. We connected the Chiefs with our professional counselors to support both the team and the families. We'll continue to provide assistance."

Pete Rozelle had the games go on as planned that Sunday at the urging of his former classmate and then White House press secretary Pierre Salinger. The thought was that the American people needed a diversion from the grief that gripped the nation. Rozelle later said it was one of his greatest regrets.
The AFL cancelled their games.

I'm sure the KC team is in disarray, but playing the game may help restore a sense of normalcy, while cancelling it might just deepen the sense of loss and unreality. I think it's the right call.
