Cubs shopping Alfonso Soriano

09:37 AM ET 12.02 | The Cubs don't have a hitter to replace him but are still willing to deal Alfonso Soriano. Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports report that the Cubs will meet with teams this week, offering Soriano and much of the $36 million left on his contract. Theo Epstein has said he won't just give away Soriano, who had a productive season in 2012 while playing an improved left field. Any trade is complicated by Soriano's 10/5 rights to veto a trade. He isn't crazy about becoming a full-time DH.

I cannot imagine any team offering much for this bum. The Cubs would still have to pay most of his salary.

The real bum here is Jim Hendry, not Soriano.

The Phillies have lost out all of the top notch outfielders except for Hamilton, and the GM has got to get an impact player for next year so maybe number 12 could switch different colored pinstripes.

If Epstein & Hoyer knew for sure they were going to get the same amount of production from him next year as they did this year, they wouldn't be as accommodating to get rid of him. But they don't know

Good luck with that! (He's not going to be movable if he isn't willing to DH.)

And he's a right hander who hits left-handed pitching well, he would bring some balance to the Phillie lineup.
I wonder if they can work out a deal.

I think he is 36 this year, so the two years left on his contract are age 37 and 38.
Last year he hit 263 with 32 HR and 108 RBI for the Cubs; he can still help a contender. His OF defense is pretty good (UZR 150 is 12. 4 for his career, and he played to his career average last year). And he appears to have mellowed a bit with age, although he is still who he is.

A part-time OF who also DHs is in the future for Soriano. A team that really needs offense - Seattle, we're looking at you - could pull the string.

I think he would veto a trade to Seattle. They also could use a RH power hitter, and are bringing in the LF fence this year, but he vetoed a trade to the Dodgers last year, and they are more likely to contend than Seattle. He has said he wants a contender, and does not want to DH.
But I think you are right, he would help Seattle a great deal if he would go there.

wiseup: I can't understand Philly worrying about signing more outfielders. that is their strength. They have Scherholz in RF , Mayberry in CF, and Dom. Brown in LF. Lance Nix as the 4th outfielder. All are under or right at 30. They should be looking for INF. and Pitching. That is where the ages are catching up with the Phillies .

Soriano is from the Dominican Republic so you have to add at least 5 years to get his actual age. He sure runs like he is a lot older than his reported age.
