USC Coach Tim Floyd said Wednesday that he told star freshman O.J. Mayo that he could accept free Lakers tickets and that if anybody should be punished for potential NCAA violations, it should be the coach. "My feeling is that if there's a mistake made, it was made by me," Floyd said. "If they want to suspend me for a game, suspend me for a game, but not the kid. He did the right thing." Floyd said he thought it was acceptable for Mayo to receive complimentary tickets from Denver Nuggets All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, whom Mayo has known since the seventh grade, because the players were friends. Mayo attended the Lakers' 116-99 victory over the Nuggets on Monday at Staples Center.

Better be careful laying on the grenade for Mayo, this won't be the last.

c'mon Melo was not recruiting the **** stache for the Nuggets he wanted him to star in Stop Snitchin' 2 with Jonnie Flynn coming out Summer 2008.

too bad when a coach doesn't know the rules -- but then again, Floyd sold his soul when he let Mayo become player/coach/prima donna for his one year of pre-NBA basketball.

Kinda gives meaning to the phrase...... "HOLD THE MAYO!!!"

A violation for accepting tickets to a game? Damn! if he bought Mayo a Snicker would that be a violation too?

January 24, 2008  01:15 PM ET

arejaydub - yes, a snickers bar would be a violation according to NCAA rules! They screwed up, they admitted it, hand down a fast and fair punishment and let's move on.

I wonder how Tim feels about selling his soul to this kid. OJ is so gone when the season ends, I need to ask is it worth the trouble.

NCAA violations at USC? I thought this was the basketball forum!

January 24, 2008  07:27 PM ET

lames, leave it alone its nothing. stop your ignorance.

January 25, 2008  01:13 AM ET

As full of violations as SC is, this is a total non-issue

Mayo wil eventualy do something to ruin his future career though, whether it's while in school or whatever NBA team takes a chance on him
