Harbaugh shielding Kaepernick from blame

08:00 AM ET 12.03 | On the face of things, the timing wasn't quite right. Comfortably ahead late in the fourth quarter, San Francisco called a play Colin Kaepernick had run hundreds of times at the University of Nevada but seldom with the 49ers -- an option pitch. Kaepernick's toss sailed over the head of receiver Ted Ginn and wound up in the end zone in the hands of a Rams' cornerback. ... The option pitch was a dubious play call, both because the 49ers had not run it often this year -- and never to Ginn -- and because of the circumstances at the time. The 49ers were ahead by eight with 3:11 remaining and were facing 3rd and 3 at their own 17-yard line. "That was on us," Jim Harbaugh said of the coaching staff. "That was the wrong play to call at that time."

By "protecting" Kaepernick, he's just protecting himself.

Harbaugh is showing a dangerous symptom common to a lot of coaches: the inability to think objectively and make an impartial decision. He's playing Kaepernick as his favorite, and justifying the decision, regardless of the outcome. He's too personally invested in Kaepernick, to the potential detriment of the team.

Contrary to what Harbaugh says to the press, Kaepernick is his guy and Smith might as well pack his bags. Harbaugh isn't going back there. They gave Smith a one year deal after trying to get Manning...they (Harbaugh) just don't like him. Only reason they're not trashing Smith is to keep his trade stock as high as possible.

Fisher has the Ram's defense playing pretty well. They fly around the field. They are a frustrating team this year, they tie and beat San Francisco, but lose to the Jets and the Dolphins....

Yep, and when they cash in some more of those draft picks they got in the RGIII trade, they should get better next year. It will be fun to watch them develop.

You hit it on the nail 100%. I have said all along that this Rex Ryan clone is going to be the downfall of SF. At this point they are a 3rd seeding and falling because of this moron and his idiot decisions. It could get worse with a coupla more losses while he's experimenting with his boy Kap.
Kap fumbling and his safety were rookie mistakes, nothing more. He is inexperiencd and moron Harbaugh has the 49er superbowl hopes hinging on "on the job training" with this rookie over a guy who was a fumble away from going to the superbowl and in all likelihood winning it, and now this! Make no mistake about it.....Harbaugh is a hot head and a problem of his own doing!

I agree Smith should be starting, but you're talking like it wasn't Harbaugh that made the Niners contenders in the first place.

Moronicness shouldn't be overlooked and it also should be pointed out. Didn't moron Rex have the Jets in the AFC Championship game two years running?.....Exactly, Harbaugh is following suit to a tee, and then comes the downfall. Only the Jets didn't have the talent SF have, and to have it blown because of this moron, well is just astounding within itself. There is a difference though, theres a superbowl winning tradition in SF and as such, I believe his rope will be a lot shorter than moron Rex.

Well look at the stats!!! The Rams have a better defense than the Bears or Saints, I said better defense, not a better "overall" team!!!
