Red Sox ready to make significant splash

08:13 AM ET 12.03 | With Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford now gone, it may be hard to remember back to a time Boston won an offseason. What is the likelihood the Sox make a major move this offseason, acquiring another high-profile player? They do, after all, have an extra quarter-billion dollars or so to spend after August's blockbuster trade sent Gonzalez, Crawford, Josh Beckett, and ' Punto -- and their salaries for 2013 and beyond -- to the Dodgers. "I don't know," said general manager Ben Cherington. "I can't handicap it. You can't rule it out. I certainly wouldn't rule it in. I think if there's a deal that we feel really makes us, the organization, stronger short and long term, we'll pursue it."

Heard an intresting rumor on MLB Network last night. Rockies may be looking to deal Troy Tulowitzki, and Boston and St. Louis are making a serious run at him.

I don't need more snow. I had a hard enough time getting out of my driveway as it was.

I don't see them making any kind of a significant splash via free agency. Possibly in a trade, but you have to give up something in order to get something back in return.

Last time the Rocks dealt a big time player (Ubaldo Jimenez) everyone thought they might be crazy - Indian's gave up 4 players (including their top two pitching prospects). This is definitely a high risk big $ gamble. If the kid can stay healthy great trade - if not maybe the LAD will want him at 2b.

They have money to spend, but on who? There is a lot of over-priced names out there. Better to work some trades or give some prospects a chance to play.
