08:18 AM ET 12.03 | For the time being, Nashville will serve as Auburn's search headquarters for what fans can hope is a final push toward naming a new football coach. One of the search committee members, Mac Crawford, lives in Nashville, and that locale could provide a safe haven for the close-knit search committee. ... It is not clear who Auburn has interviewed since Saturday's games that featured a handful of likely candidates. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher spent Sunday in Tallahassee planning the Seminoles' trip to the Orange Bowl. Other likely candidates include Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn, TCU coach Gary Patterson, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Boise State coach Chris Petersen and former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino.

Why would Jimbo leave FSU for Auburn?

December 3, 2012  08:57 AM ET

I could understand Auburn in the good times but right now... with sanctions looming?

No thanks.

Gus, maybe.

Petrino is the best choice....w/ NCAA sanctions pending I don't think he nor the school have any better options.

Will take a beating on the court of public opinion, but will win faster with Petrino than any other likely candidate. Fisher, Patterson, Petersen et al will not take this job w/ NCAA issues and other jobs open. Petrino will win more, faster than Gus, Jones, Franklin, etc

This would seem to make the most sense.

If Fisher takes the Aubie job, both teams in the Orange Bowl would be led by a new head coach. NIU's head coach left for NCSt.

No way Fisher goes to Aubie w/ NCAA smoking around. He's surely take the Tenn job first, wouldn't he?

if not, he deserves whatever he gets for being stoooopid.

Whatever UTK is facing in the way of NCAA spanking is out on the table. Done. So, Tennessee has an advantage over schools with violations that haven't been processed fully by the NCAA. If the Piggies have an advantage, it would be in the purse...

I think in the long run Patterson is the best choice because he seems to be more defensive oriented and as the cliche goes, "defense wins championships." Considering Chizik has two 8-5 season and a perfect season and was still fired, I don't know if any coach will be given time to build the program to championship level.

IMO, Patterson would be the best choice at Aubie, Arkansas, or Tenn. I'm taking him off the table b/c I hear he's turned down $4.5 mill + at Arky and is staying.

No doubt he's the first choice here....just don't think he's coming
