Dodgers in on R.A. Dickey trade talks

What else can a 38 year old pitcher who had one big year bring back in return, nothing but prospects.

If there is a a deal tha main person they get in return will be for almost ready prospect like the Beltran deal.

With the uncertainty of Dickey's age and past performance (just 1 really good year, but the last 3 years pretty darn good) the Mets likely won't get anything more than 2 or 3 prospects, one of which might be ready for the bigs this year. No reason to trade him if they don't like the offers. On the other hand, if he even comes close to last years' performance, and the Mets aren't contending in 2013, he becomes a trade deadline target and the Mets can expect the pot to be sweetened considerably. His option has been exercised so there's really nothing R.A. can do except pitch for his next contract this year. Of course if he has a lackluster year then it's a lose-lose situation in that the Mets would get nothing for him when he walks and R.A. would certainly have left some money on the table. So the real question in my mind is, who is the better gambler? I'd bet on R.A. to have another good year and get traded at the deadline.

Mets need to keep Dickey. He wants only 2 or 3 yr. Contract. He won'thinder 2015 budget for team.
Mets were very competitive in first half of 2012.
With Bay, Torres, R. Ramirez and Acosta gone Mets are better by subtraction.
Austin Kearns and or Ryan Ludwick give team decent OF.
A hard throwing reliever and a power righthand hitting C and you have a team that will vie for wildcard.
Marlins are a disaster, phillies are old, and Nats may be a fluke.
Dickey at worst will be a good P in 2013.
Niese and or Gee can get the much needed C, and are more easily replaceable than a CY YOUNG winner.
Gee for saltamacchia is the way to go.
If Duda and Niese gets Will Myers from Royals that would be best.

If not use Niese for top flight C and a good reliever.

The blue jays have catcher and outfield prospects.welcome to canada dickey.

Ideally they would net a power-hitting outfielder, instantly filling their greatest area of need. But they would also accept a catcher. Or anything else, really -- any package that they consider fair value is fair game. Quality trumps quantity in discussions of this nature.

Who did the Mets get for Beltran?

Wheeler?

High End prospect - but when the Mets made the trade, he was in High A ball.

This will be his 4th Pro year and he's still not a lock to make the Big Squad (sad as that is).

If the mets could sign him long term they would. Their inability to do that means they might trade his last year for prospects.

The fact that Wheeler was in high A is pretty much irrelevant, he was the 6th player taken in '09 draft, to get a prospect like that for 2 months of Beltran was a tremendous deal for New York.

Wheeler is likely to make his major league appearance this year, less than two years after the Mets acquired him, that's "almost ready" in my book.

Dickey seems to be gone, but to whom?

You know what's irrelevant?

6th Overall pick in the Draft... See Geoff Goetz: New York Mets (Sixth Overall Pick, 1997 Draft) or Dewon Brazelton: Tampa Bay Rays (Third Overall Pick, 2001) or Paul Wilson: New York Mets (First Overall Pick, 1994).

or a hole list of High picks that have flamed out (if there was a flame there to begin with).

When I think of almost there, I think of guys who can come in September and make the roster the next year - we know the Mets could have used that.

And your right... Wheeler will likely make his debut - but we're talking about the Mets here... what other options do they have.
