07:58 AM ET 12.04 | Romeo Crennel had tried to help. He had stood in the parking lot of the Kansas City Chiefs' practice site with Jovan Belcher early Saturday morning. He was uncertain what was troubling Belcher, whom he knew as a strong-willed leader who sat in the front at meetings. He did not know that less than an hour earlier, Belcher had fatally shot his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins. Belcher thanked General Manager Scott Pioli and Crennel for all they had done for him. "I was trying to get him to understand that life is not over, he still has a chance, and let's get this worked out," Crennel said Monday, adding that he did not know of any personal issues that Belcher might have had. But Belcher turned away from both of them and shot himself.

Can't imagine the horror.

Once he shot and killed his girlfriend there was no turning back for him.

I can't imagine how you try to move on after witnessing something like that.

Belcher screwed up a lot of peoples lives with his actions, and left them to deal with it.

By having a pair, plain and simple.

Feel so sorry for Crennel. Why should he have to live with that awful mental image the rest of his life?

The true mark of a coward would be to run to Mexico.

Think about it. Do you know what's on the other side? It takes a certain leap of faith to pull the trigger with the gun at your own head.

Disparaging Belcher makes no sense right now. He's dead. His girlfriend is dead. The focus should be on the little girl made an orphan that no one is talking about, and Mr. Crennel who had to go through that. Football means little.

Tried to talk him into playing defense, too. Some people just don't listen.
