More on WVU-Rodriguez divorce

In the messy divorce that is West Virginia University v. Rich Rodriguez, the latest salvo is a trail of documents not only illustrating a "deteriorating relationship" between the athletic department, the administration and the football coach, but also an insistence by the university president's office in early December to cease discussing Rodriguez's list of a final few demands -- which all parties agreed to tackle four months earlier. The Post-Gazette yesterday obtained from a source close to the situation a memo reiterating verbal agreements made as part of the Aug. 24 signing of Rodriguez's contract extension. The memo, written and sent Aug. 27, details a meeting that new President Mike Garrison opened by talking about "the culture change" across the campus. The memo also reported that second-in-command Chief of Staff Craig Walker agreed to work to fulfill several items on Rodriguez's wish list, such as an increase in the pool of money for assistants, the waiver of the $5 university-handling fee on "free" game tickets to high school coaches, and permission for football players to keep their scholarship-supplied books at the end of each semester. Those were three of the final demands that Rodriguez raised Dec. 15, when Garrison and Walker declined to discuss them any further. Rodriguez then decided to accept Michigan's offer to become its head coach.

Oh the hatred.

I wonder how RR will solve Michigans real problem. Stopping the spread, not running it.

January 24, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Don't worry about RR and the spread...worry about Daryl Clark being able to not fumble the ball on the goal line.

He recovered that one, but he may not be so lucky when it counts next time.

This article is stupid. That's why I took the shot at the Penn State fan. I don't feel the need to actually adress the article.

January 24, 2008  09:56 AM ET

I thought that you took the shot at the Penn state fan because they bite. Seriously, how long has it been since PSU has beaten UM? And PSU fans still want to talk smack? Really?

January 24, 2008  10:38 AM ET

That wasn't smack. It's a legit question. M hasn't ever been a bad offensive team.

I'm well aware of the PS losing streak to M. I'm also aware of the M losing streak to OSU. It makes next years games that much more exciting for all of us.

January 24, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Hova - Clarks play wasn't a fumble, it was a TD...and a great play.

January 24, 2008  11:54 AM ET

I had to You Tube that after I said it. Still was a stupid move on his part with the ball exposed. No matter. We still got y'all number.

2 - A kickass mullet.
3 - And a trailer park rent payment.

January 24, 2008  12:25 PM ET

He exposed it to score a TD and he has never started a college game.

You're right, it doesn't matter. We won the game just like Michigan won theirs after 2 goal line fumbles by Hart.

January 24, 2008  12:26 PM ET

Back to RR & WVU...

January 24, 2008  02:38 PM ET

Either way, WV looks real bad in all this. I can't imagien any recruit wanting to play for that school. Rodriguez is no saint but compared to the idiots who run WV he looks good. WV seems like a bunch of classless sore losers. Hopefully they get use to losing because the way they handled this is going to make it hard for top recruits to go there.

January 24, 2008  03:12 PM ET

All this off-field stuff is pretty boring, as several have noted. I suspect that it's all posturing for the lawsuit. There's $4m on the table, and the vultures - ahem - lawyers are circling. I assume U-M agreed to cover RR's exit clause, if it ever gets paid. Broken verbal agreements don't mean squat in the courtroom / litigation process unless one can prove intent to deceive, but U-M's legal team has won at the Supreme Court (in the a landmark affirmative action case in the '90's), so the hicks can take their best shot - they are messing with The Leaders and the Best.

More relevantly, RR did a great job putting WVU into the national title conversation, and that is why U-M hired him. Not because he runs the spread-option, but because he has a track record of success, and as we are finding out, goes to bat for his players and coaches.

January 24, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Note on U-M v PSU. I love how this game turned into an Instant Classic as soon as PSU joined the Big Ten! As I recall, the visiting team won the first 4 games, adding to the tension. Momentum has PSU rising and U-M falling right now, so I expect it will be quite a game this year!

January 24, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Success? Maybe, he did lead them to several really good season but definitely not my choice to lead a team into a big game. Anyone see the Pitt game? Not to mention UL and USF and Rutgers in previous years.
I say just pay the money and get on with it, tired of hearing about it. He chose to leave so he owes it.
Only time is going to tell if UM made a good choice.
All Michigan fans just need to learn one word for the upcoming season, BUBBLE SCREEN!

January 24, 2008  03:35 PM ET

WVU sounds like the proverbial "psycho ex-girlfriend/boyfriend", just can't accept that their love interest has moved on..."Ohhhhh Rich, Michigan will NEVER love you the way WE love you...GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE, I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN...I didn't mean it, PLEASE come back!"

ANYONE who takes that coaching job after seeing WVU's treatment of RichRod, is foolish.

January 24, 2008  03:59 PM ET

Aww boo hoo hoo, you should be more mad about Rodriguez CHOKING against the Pitt Panthers than him leaving to go to Michigan. Michigan over West Virginia is a NO BRAINER

That twas awesome!

January 24, 2008  04:49 PM ET

Yes, lets all mock the WVU fan, he' s probably from West Virginia, hell he might have even gone to WVU......oh wait, so did Michigan's new coach...so I suppose I'm confused, are you calling your new would-be-savior coach ****? Cause if **** were coaching the amazing maize and blue...well, that'd just make the 5th straight loss to OSU all the more embarrassing...
