In a region that attracts recruiters from far and wide to cherry-pick football talent, Rutgers stands as the decade's biggest importer of South Florida goods. And perhaps its biggest beneficiary. No fewer than 44 players from South Florida have signed national letters of intent with Rutgers since 2000, according to The Miami Herald's survey of recent recruiting classes. North Carolina State was second with 31 South Florida imports, with Western Michigan (29) a surprising third. Connecticut, Auburn and Pittsburgh also have taken at least 20 South Floridians.

Rutgers has a huge billboard on I-95 in Hollywood, Florida. They promote their school very well down in South FLA.

The talent is here, period. There is a city called Boynton Beach. This small city has produced Vince Wilfork, Brad Banks, CJ Jones, Damien Sims, Cory Banks, Mike Rumph, and Anquan Boldin. All over the past 6 years. I know some of these name aren't house whole but they all played major college football and were on an NFL team at some point. UM and FSU are both down. So other schools will be able to get some prize recruits out of Florida. See South Florida???.

My nephew is a junior receiver in Alabama being recruited by Vandy, Miss. St., Bama, and Michigan St, . he came down here to visit and we when to a game. He was blown away with the overall speed of the game.

January 24, 2008  12:52 PM ET

thats why the canes should always be good.the talent is right here in there own backyard

January 24, 2008  12:54 PM ET

Knowshon Moreno is from Jersey, so maybe they need to worry more about getting their in-state recruits first. Then again, Georgia got a great player from jersey, so nevermind.

January 24, 2008  02:23 PM ET

It's true, for many years NJ/NY top talent have gone to other schools (Dwayne Jarrett, Moreno, Myron Rolle). When Schiano first got to Rutgers he actually had to build the base of recruits using some of the lesser recruited So Fla talent. Only recently has Rutgers even been getting some of those top recruits. But if Rutgers can lock down the NJ/NY talent, they will be very good.

Browardcane,

Actually he is from Pahokee and Brad is from Belle Glades. However, they all played a lots of youth football in Boynton Beach. (Brad, Quan, Cory, and CJ) are all first cousins (sisters and brothers kids). I guess we can say it in their genes.

Vince did it all in high school. He actually punted until a recruiter told his dad it was too high of risk exposing his knees. I saw hid stand flat footed and dunk a basketball when he was in HS at 285 +- 10 pounds. He was nasty too.

January 24, 2008  02:46 PM ET

ya.....the talent is down here.when i played at st thomas ,dillard's 2 starting wrs were issac bruce and frank sanders.there rb,otis mounds went to auburn, safety went to auburn and there corner went to the canes.it was unbelievable.the best games down here as u know in broward are st thomas/dillard, st thomas/ely,,dillard/ely(soul bowl) and deerfield against any of those teams.talent all over the field.thats not even including dade or palm beach county

January 24, 2008  02:52 PM ET

In PBC, I must say Atlantic, Santalucus, PB Lakes, Glades Central, and Pahokee are the top schools in football.

Hey where is that kid Kenny Boynton going to HS? I saw him as an eight grader and told my friend he was the real deal then.

January 24, 2008  03:00 PM ET

he was at ely and transferred this yr to american heritage.i havent seen him play but i here hes the real deal

January 24, 2008  03:01 PM ET

where did u go to high school?

January 24, 2008  03:06 PM ET

academic excellence.

January 24, 2008  03:07 PM ET

If FSU and UM want to rebuild their programs they HAVE to keep the local talent. Both South Florida and the Panhandle have excellent high school football.

I've also seen the Rutgers billboards in Florida. Interesting recruiting tactic, but maybe it works.

January 24, 2008  03:10 PM ET

the 3 biggest classes this yr ....4a,5a,6a all state champs were from south fla...booker t,st thomas and miami northwestern.if the canes could get every good recruit just from those 3 schools they would be loaded

January 24, 2008  03:11 PM ET

I when to CVS on the Southside of Chicago. I moved to the SF (West Boynton Beach) in 1989. ALl thes kids would play and would out at the Ezell Hester Center which is about a half mile from Wilfork's house.

January 24, 2008  03:21 PM ET

The first known Florida recruit to sign with Rutgers was from Atlantic High School in Delray Beach (Tres Moses).

January 24, 2008  03:24 PM ET

Hols112,

You are right. FSU and UM are down and those two programs just don't have the drawing power they once had. UM don't have a home stadium and FSU coach needs to move on.

Kenny Phillips is the next stud from UM.

January 24, 2008  03:35 PM ET

fsu and miami will be back.both have good recruiting classes and both have had QB problems. miami and fsu were dominate when they had good qbs, same with UF now, leak was good as senior and tebow is a stud

January 24, 2008  03:39 PM ET

Broward,

I have to respectfully disagree with you. Tebow is a FB, paly QB. He may do well in Myer's system but thats it.

Who was the last good QB UM or FSU had? Dorsey and Ward respectively....
