Notre Dame defense takes hit

The Notre Dame defensive line is reportedly taking another dramatic hit. The former high school coach of defensive tackle Derrell Hand told Blue & Gold Illustrated that a hereditary disease in Hand's spinal cord may end his career. "He's going to get a second opinion about it," said Brian Fulk, the coach at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. "But at this point, it doesn't look real good for him to play football ever again." If the report is true and Hand can't take the field in 2008, the defensive front -- an area that was already a question mark -- becomes a full-blown concern.

As much as I dislike ND, that's a real shame for that kid. All your dreams go up in smoke because of something that was predetermined way before you were born.

You know, it's pretty sad that the focus is on "Notre Dame defense" becoming a "full blown concern" when there's a kid a facing a congenital - and career-ending - disease.

Thank you MSFC3221, & SoonerGirl - I hope the rest of the people follow your lead. Even if they hate ND. Think about if your doctor told you to stop doing something you loved, or you would risk your long term health.

I wish Mr. Hand the best. Also, one other point this is why kids (in high school) need to think more about the college they choose, NOT just the sport(s) they intend to play.

I am going to follow the lead. This is a terrible story. To no longer be able to do something you love because of disease is terrible.

I wish him the best.

This is not good for Notre Dame, they've already lost Pat Kuntz for the season, but this is even worse for Mr. Hand. I too was told by a doctor to stop playing when I finished High School and the feeling of someone else telling you you can't do somthing you love anymore is one of the worst feelings you could imagine.

Say what you want about Notre Dame athletics, but Notre Dame is a great academic school and Mr. Hand will be a success in life with his Notre Dame degree.

Forget ND, what about the kid who had a football future spread out for him?? It's a shame.

January 24, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Canes, Pat Kuntz isn't necessarily lost for the season. He hopes to be back for fall camp.

January 24, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Hopefully ND will honor his scholarship offer and let him be part of the team in some fashion.

January 24, 2008  11:22 AM ET

This is old news. He already missed a season because of it.

Feel bad for him. He had a lot of future.

January 24, 2008  02:06 PM ET

This is a bummer for him. However, he is lucky that ND didn't kick him out after the "incident" this summer. Now he can get a good degree. I wish him the best and hope he can live a normal life.

January 24, 2008  03:00 PM ET

I agree with SoonerGirl. The focus of this story should be on the hardship the kid is facing, not on Notre Dame's defensive line woes.

January 24, 2008  04:03 PM ET

ND Defense takes a hit? How many times was that expression uttered in 2007?

January 24, 2008  04:44 PM ET

As much as I hate ND, this is a real shame.

January 24, 2008  04:48 PM ET

sad to hear... screw football, i hope the kid comes out okay!! weis can play the whole d-line

January 24, 2008  07:09 PM ET

Amen, SG.

January 25, 2008  12:54 AM ET

i didn't know it could get any worse

January 26, 2008  10:12 AM ET

May God Bless this kid. I will pray for your health. Football should be a distant last place, when perserving life and this kids future. Stay in school and get your degree.

January 26, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Alice! One of these days....POWWW, right to the moon!!!

January 27, 2008  08:07 PM ET

I dont care who he plays for or want to play for my heart and prayers go out to this kid and his family. I also hope he can stay in school and get his degree

Not only his career but maybe his quality of life could be at stake.
