Top-rated QB commits to USC
Quarterback Matt Barkley of Santa Ana Mater Dei, considered the No. 1 high school football prospect in the nation for the class of 2009, abruptly ended the recruiting process on Wednesday by announcing he had committed to USC. "I'm very excited," said the 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior who passed for 3,560 yards and 35 touchdowns and was selected the Gatorade national player of the year.

He's pretty good. Also, the QB situation should be clear by the time he gets there. If I am not mistaken by 2009 Mustain and Sanchez would be redshirt Juniors. Meaning that this kid sits for a couple of years and it's his show.

What?, and give up the nice car and house that USC will provide for his family...

Awesome news!!! I saw this kid play as a sophomore (starting at Mater Dei varsity as a freshman by the way) and thought he was the real deal.

so much for the NormChow hype of yesterday -- UCLA will not be as attractive as USC for top NFL-hopefuls so long as Carroll is there -- sorry, USC-haters. and for those somewhat rarer scholar-athletes, USC is also better academically unless you want cinematography or medschool.

If Carroll leaves, he will change his mind.

Another reason why UCLA will get more talent. What five-star QBwould attend SC now? Most have heard about Barkley's ties to the school so beating him out for the job would be next to impossible. Many thought Sanchez was a better QB than Booty if given the opportunity.

I'm surprised that he would commit so early considering he's the #1 prospect in the nation, but at the same time it shows that he's so serious about winning that elusive CIF championship that he would cut his recruitment early to focus on his final season at Mater Dei. UCLA was never in the running as Carroll has been recruiting this kid for years. The odd man out is Aaron Corp who's now stuck between Mitch Mustain and Barkley in the QB pecking order. I expect him to transfer to a program that runs the spread.
silverblack23... USC has made some academic strides lately but it's still not on par with UCLA.

HUGE pick up! The kid has Heisman written all over him. All of you can hate as much as you want. The Trojan family knows what his commitment means. At Mater Dei, it has been Leinart, Colt Brannen, then Barkley. He's a four-year starter.
ishXdavid- "not on par with UCLA"? only ranked two spots behind them in national undergraduate rankings.

How 'bout 'em is right. " It's a long time until February 2009. "
Not like too many kids decommitt from Southern Cal, but it's still over 1yr away till he can even put his name on the line!
What if he takes a BIG hit & can't play any more???

the only QBs that can live up to the hype are the ones that are fast or physical (Tebow, Young, etc), other than those, no QB is garanteed to be good or a Heisman candidate while playing high school, there are tons of overhyped QBs that were never really that good

He's good. I don't know much about him, but he's got good intangables. SC finally got a local QB to stay. ND got Crist and Clausen, but now they have Barkley. He may be good, but wasn't Xaiver Lee suppose to be the next Michael Vick. It's hard to recruit.

Irish - You guys got Clausen, but we countered with Mustain. Crist was certainly recruited by SC, but not as hard as he should have been, solely bc Barkley was right behind him. Crist going to ND still doesnt make sense, unless he expects to redshirt and Clausen to leave after his jr yr. Which he said he wont bc he would beat SC all four yrs he was in indiana. How is little jimmy doing in the snow right about now?
