08:04 AM ET 12.05 | The New Orleans Hornets may be ready for a nickname of their own -- but they are apparently not ready to talk about it. [Hornets] spokesman Greg Bensel denied a Yahoo! Sports report that owner Tom Benson plans to change the nickname of his NBA franchise from the Hornets to Pelicans. "We're not confirming that is the name," Bensel said. "This is a process that's ongoing and still in discussions. And it will be eventually decided by the NBA." Benson, though, is actively pushing for a name change and he has owned the rights to the Pelican nickname for years. In an interview on Fox Sports Television, Gayle Benson, Tom's wife, said she wants to change the team???s colors to navy blue, red and gold.

The Yahoo story on this mentions interest in Charlotte about having the Hornets name returned to them. It is a shame it is too late the Lakers, Jazz, Giants, Dodgers, Cardinals[even with earlier stops in Racine & Chicago].

Couldnt agree more. Lakers in LA? No lakes in LA, bro. No Jazz in SLC. No booze either. Teams should not be allowed to take the name with them when they relocate.

Pelicans? Why not some actual bird of prey or atleast something fierce. I would have even settled for crows. At least they were destructive in that Birds movie
