08:19 AM ET 12.05 | So long, Joe? Joe Louis Arena, which seats 20,066 for hockey, opened on Dec. 12, 1979 and is the fourth-oldest arena in the NHL. It lacks many of the amenities found in newer buildings, including lucrative mid-level suites. Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch, who purchased the team in 1982, have been seeking a new arena for several years. On Tuesday, Olympia Development announced in a press release its plans to explore the viability of a new state-of-the-art "multi-purpose events center" to anchor an "innovative district" in Detroit's downtown core comprised of residential, retail and office facilities. The release said the $650 million project hinges on passage of state legislation that allows for use of Downtown Development Authority funds.

The Joe is one of the last true old barns. I'd be sad to see it go, but $$ talks.

I remember thinking that about the old Olympia.

Been to the Joe once, I liked it quite a bit, there's something to be said for the old school rinks.

Yup the Joe is a great place for a hockey game. Even has great standing room spots.

You speak the truth. I hear the new arena is going to seat only about 18,000 because we can't come up with enough butts in Detroit these days to fill all the seats of a place like the Joe. More corporate boxes and such to compensate. Yikes

I like the old barns too and have gone to all of them (at least once). But, I'd be lying if I said I liked 'em better than the new, ultra-comfortable new arenas. Of course, what I don't like are $150-$180 seats for a late October game against Phoenix. :-)

Has the look of a Shane Doan thread -- we haven't seen one of those in a while

Hate the Consol compared to the Civic (I call it Civic, not Mellon) for a hockey game, but I do love it for a concert. Guess you gotta take the good with the bad?
