07:58 AM ET 12.06 | This much is clear: Percy Harvin's 2012 is over. Yet, as is often the case with Harvin, Wednesday's definitive news contained an odd layer of mystery, too. In the morning, after announcing Harvin would miss the day's practice, [Leslie Frazier] was asked directly if there were additional issues beyond the ankle that had contributed to the receiver's continued absence. The Vikings coach looked up, then down. He hesitated for a second and carefully formed his response. "You know, it's ..." Frazier said. "I know that he wants to win like we do. And I'm sure he's going to do everything he can to do what he has to do to help our football team. "We'll see where it goes." It wasn't exactly a straightforward answer to a head-on inquiry.

On the other hand, did any of us think that the Vikings would be as good as 6-6 at this point in the season? As I recall, there was popular sentiment, me included, that they would be contending for that #1 draft pick.

That's fair.

Not so much as their record... They actually came out of the gate at 4-2 I think. Some of his personell decisions, and the way he has went about handling players (even A.P.) is questionable.

Harvin is probably holding out for a real QB to throw to him.

In other words, for a trade?
The Vikings are caught in quarterback hell - they need a better one, but Ponder's not bad enough to get them the draft pick they need.

Well said. And that is true for a number of teams around the league.

And they don't have the talent evaluators to cherry pick a Tom Brady, either.

I'm not sure that the QB situation has done much to give him a shot.

I don't think the QB situation is a long-term problem. Ponder has shown signs he can be a really good one.

Until recently the general rule with rookie QBs in the NFL was that they weren't NFL ready until their 3rd year. It took them that long to learn the complexities of reading defenses, learning playbooks, etc. The common quote from a QB who made that 3rd year leap was that the game "slowed down" for them. With more and more colleges running pro style offenses you're getting more and more QBs in a position to succeed out of the gate. A good example is Luck. RG3 is not a good example because the Redskins run a version of the Pistol offense so they adapted to him rather than asking him to adapt to a new system. You're seeing more of that in the NFL too. The point is that Ponder is in year 2. Let's see what he does next year before labeling him a bust. IMHO, I think he's going to be much better next year, especially if they can get another WR to remove some of the double teams from Harvin.

That's ironic. The Vikings suck at winning, but they also suck at losing.
