08:04 AM ET 12.06 | Even an absent Alex Rodriguez can haunt New York. The Yankees' search for a dependable stopgap at third base hit a snag Wednesday. Two of the more reasonable options for the position, one vacated by [Rodriguez] due to an impending hip surgery, signed with other clubs. Jeff Keppinger left the market first, taking a reported three-year, $12 million deal with the Chicago White Sox. Then Eric Chavez, who resuscitated his career with a strong 2011 campaign for the Yankees, bolted for a reported one-year, $3 million contract with Arizona. That leaves Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who did not address reporters Wednesday, with limited options. One is former Red Sox All-Star Kevin Youkilis. The other is former Orioles third baseman Mark Reynolds.

going after the discards of their AL competitors. Not a good sign.

Michael Young would be a better option than either of these guys.

Yankees chasing Youk. Life is just too funny sometimes.

QUOTE(#5):

I think Youk would be a great fit-

They'll need to have Joba and Youk kiss and make up.

That said... Boston just signed Johnny "the thug" Gomes. He's the guy who pounded the ^&* out of Coco Crisp in a fight a few years back. Memories apparently are short.

QUOTE(#5):

I think Youk would be a great fit-

With Youk at 3B and Jeter at SS, I can see a lot of ground balls getting getting out to LF.

Do the Yanks have a SS they can bring up and move Derek to 3B? That may be the way to go IMO.

QUOTE(#9):

Gomes is a "dirtball" and I mean that as a compliment. He plays hard, is loyal to his teammates and will do anything to win. How he goes about it isn't pretty but he is a guy you like when he is on your team and hate when he is not

I am sensing that. Well put.

With a gimpy ankle, Jeter may not have the arm to play the hot corner.

Once up on a tine in baseball the Yankees had no trouble in getting any player they wanted, but times have changed with free agencies, loyalty gone, and teams have just as much money to spend as the Yanks do.
