Butch Davis emerges as FIU's first choice

08:09 AM ET 12.06 | Welcome to the mill, Butch Davis. [Davis] is the front-runner for the now vacant FIU coaching position, sources close to the situation tell the Sun Sentinel. The current Tampa Bay Buccaneers special assistant is close with FIU athletic director Pete Garcia, who worked with Davis at Miami from 1995-2000 as the team's director of football operations. Together at Miami, the two built the foundation of the team's 2001 national champion squad. Davis left Miami in 2000 to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, and Garcia followed him to Cleveland. In 2003, Garcia became a vice president of the Browns. Davis resigned in Cleveland in December 2004, but accepted the head coaching job at North Carolina a little more than a year later.

This is unfortuately a done deal, looks like.
FIU oughtta be ashamed for how they treated Cristobal, and for wanting to hire this guy. Cristobal had made progress with that program and it appears had a terrible year for injuries, and we all know that shizzitte happens -- and Garcia saw it as his opening to boot Cristobal for his pal Davis. Obvious cronyism is obvious.
