Ward stung by Big Ben's words

Hines Ward spends his time these days at home in Atlanta, recovering from postseason surgery on his right knee. A different kind of hurt was delivered by his own quarterback last week. Ben Roethlisberger called for the Steelers to acquire a tall wide receiver, specifically to help inside the 20 and for a bailout target when he's under pressure. He said he had that with 6-foot-5 Plaxico Burress, but not since after the 2004 season. "I'm always going to ask for a tall receiver," Roethlisberger said in an interview with the Post-Gazette. "That's just me. Our receivers are unbelievable, but our tallest guy might be Hines. Or Santonio [Holmes]. Hines is going to say he's 6 foot, but he's 5-11." That stung Ward, the most decorated Steelers receiver in history. "I don't hear Tom Brady or Peyton Manning asking for that," Ward said yesterday.

actually, you do.. thats why they got Moss..
hey Hines, theres always room for one more here in NE

You still get a lot of passes thrown your way Hines. Be sensible, what QB wouldn't want a tall WR? Dosesn't mean you're out of the game plan. Might actually be better for you. Develop into a Welker type role. Beau coup catches.

Peyton had Marvin and then got Reggie so there was no need to ask.

January 25, 2008  07:39 AM ET

wow - this is going to get blown way out of proportion.

January 25, 2008  07:41 AM ET

It looks like he's crying in the picture. So fitting. You don't hear Manning and Brady saying that because right now they're good for receivers.

But Ward can't do it all. It amazes me how pizzy he can be when the team brings in other receivers to help him do his job!

Just be quiet and let them bring in someone who will get double covered so you can catch more balls!

Exactly my point Oso. Thanks for saying it better. Morning, by the way. Any ice where you are?

January 25, 2008  07:50 AM ET

The Raiders would love to have Fenaca and Ward. Both needs at those positions.

January 25, 2008  08:00 AM ET

I'm pretty sure Ward would like a QB who throws the ball instead of holding on too long and ending up eating dirt while getting sacked!!! In the words of another superstar, "You can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you get what you need!"and I think Ward fills the role of what Ben needs. A worthy receiver!

since the nfl doesn't have a "Eddie Gaedel" rule, the pitts gm should draft a midget in the 7th round come draft day. just as a way to let ben know, he already has a great receiver.

not to mention, it would be funny to see a midget go over the middle once in an nfl game.

January 25, 2008  08:06 AM ET

Hahahaha pw. That's a funny image.

January 25, 2008  08:07 AM ET

I bet Ben's girlfriend wishes he was a couple inches taller somewhere on his body!!!

Players these days are WAY too sensitive. Get over it.

In TO's defense, it was after their season was over so, officially, he wasn't crying in football, per se.
