08:17 AM ET 12.06 | Along with a fair amount of optimism entering Wednesday, the NHL lockout also saw tensions rise during a session that lasted into the wee hours. The conversation went something like this. "Let's leave," said Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, turning to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. "It's up to you," replied Daly. At that point during the talks between the NHL and NHL Players Association on Wednesday, a day that began as a continuation of the momentum generated on Tuesday, both sides were at the precipice, and the 2012-13 season was in jeopardy. ... But with Jacobs poised to abandon the talks, other owners spoke up, and then both sides dramatically backed away from the precipice.

K so why keep involving him? Seriously, in the 35+ years he's owned the B's, they've been successful both on ice and off it for maybe 5. Who in the hell wants somebody like that representing a bargaining position in the first place?

Funny to me. You would think Jacobs makes enough dough that he would want to spend a little and win more cups.

Jacobs makes money hand over fist whether the Bruins win or lose. It's time for Charlie Jacobs to take over and Bettman can move back to the NBA and let him destroy that Association.

He has spent plenty. His reputation as a miserly owner is false and it stems from his refusal to break the bank for a few star players over the years. People conveniently forget that he spent outrageous sums for a number of free agents who then came to Boston and sucked. Bill Guerin comes to mind immediately.
Check the payroll numbers.

Aside from the negotiation aspect of your comment you couldn't be more wrong. The Bruins may not have won a cup til a couple of years ago, but to suggest that they've only had 5 successful seasons during his tenure is completely false. This isn't the Leafs we're talking about.

From the full article above; "Also, the owners want a 10-year collective bargaining agreement, according to the Sportsnet.ca report. The players want a much shorter term."
Buttman and the owners have taken a lot of grief around here for the perception that they won't do a long term deal.

Then how do you explain this?

Hopefully both side realize there is no point in doing all this for a deal of less then 10 years.

10 years is the length of the TV contract with NBC.

As a fan I would like to see 10 years of labor peace, since every time the contract expires we go through nonsense like this.

I agree with this to a point, but the bruins' fan base is a very loyal one, so he knows he will always make money
