04:33 PM ET 12.06 | NBA commissioner David Stern finally spoke out on his decision to fine the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 for resting four players in a loss to the Miami Heat last Tuesday. In an interview, he said that the league was never notified of the decision. "In the case of San Antonio, they didn't just come into town and rest healthy players. They sent a 26-year-old and a 30-year-old, plus Manu [Ginobili] and Tim [Duncan] home virtually under cover of darkness." Stern was using a figure of speech, as the Spurs actually had those players catch a morning flight.

shouldn't have sent them home, but had every right not to play them

also- had they not gone home the day before-stern wouldn't have even known they weren't playing until the game started- which means he wouldn't have stuck his foot in his mouth that day

Okay, but like I said before, "Sterns set a dangerous precedent when he fined the Spurs, as he will now have to fine any other team in the future, that rest their starters"!!!!

I agree. Next time Pop should have all the players suit up, just don't play them any minutes.
DNP - Coach's decision. Then wtf is Stern going to do?

Incredible. Stern keeps spinning this, trying to justify what he did.

Memo to Stern: There is an old saying. When you're standing in a hole and you want to get out, the first step is to *stop digging*.

of course he does...he doesn't want the least marketable team in the finals

I would have thought that the least marketable team was the Cavs.
