Archie Manning: Peyton cancelled meeting with 49ers this offseason

07:13 PM ET 12.06 | Archie Manning has come out and said that Peyton Manning indeed had a meeting set up with the San Francisco 49ers, but he cancelled it before it happened. The story we have been told by Jim Harbaugh was that he and Greg Roman were just "evaluating" Peyton and they planned to go with Alex Smith as their starter along. We all knew before Colin Kaepernick was promoted to starting quarterback that the Niners pursuit of Peyton was more than just an evaluation visit. Come on, Harbaugh and Roman traveled cross-country to North Carolina and kept the meeting a secret until someone leaked the information about the visit. If Alex Smith didn't believe Harbaugh trusted him to quarterback the 49ers this season after the Peyton visit and Kaepernick keeping the starting QB job after he was healthy, than he certainly knows now.

Why is there so much ink being invested in talking about Alex Smith? He has been demoted many times and has only had 3 relatively good, but not spectacular which is what should be expected of a #1 overall draft pick, in all of his years in the league. He had a good year last year, one good one with Norv Turner, and this incomplete season thus far this year.
