Rex Ryan likely to return next year with Jets

04:02 AM ET 12.07 | Rex Ryan may not be on his way out after all. According to New York Daily News writer Manish Mehta, the Jets are more likely to move G.M. Mitch Tannebaum. Ryan is under contract in New York for two more years, and a firing would probably come next season when the Jets owe Ryan a lot less money. It also gives Ryan a chance to straighten things out in the Big Apple, as this season was a blip on the radar. As bad as things have been with the Jets from the end of last season through this year, Ryan will have a 50-50 rating in terms of making or missing the playoffs. As ruthless as the NFL is, unless you're A.J. Smith you don't fire a coach on a 50-50 hunch. Should Ryan miss the playoffs again next season, not only is it more justifiable to fire him then, but there will likely be a better coaching crop. As of now the top two candidates are Jon Gruden and Chip Kelly, both of whom will likely be going elsewhere if anywhere at all.

Seriously? Another year? I can't imagine what it must feel like to be a Jets fan.

Being a Jets fan must be like being a Dolphins fan. Used to be relevant, haven't been for a long time. Beginning to forget they were ever any good. Another year????

Hope they give him a 14 year contract to show they have faith in him.

They would have to be dead naked little boys for that to be a feasible answer

It's not Ryan. It's Tebow. Tebow is the new T.O., except he's neither a [insert racial slur] nor a psychopath. But as long as Jesus Christ is on this team, it will be sub-par.

It was sub-par last year, too, while Tebow took his team to the playoffs.
Whatever Rex sees in Sanchez really isn't there. We don't know the internal dynamics of what goes on between Rex, Sporano, Tannenbaum and Woody, but someone keeps making the same mistake week after week.

You don't need a good QB to go to the Super Bowl. Just look at Mark Rypien and Trent Dilfer. Two of the worst EVER and yet they both have Super Bowl rings.

If they decide to keep him, I would still grab a legitimate Offensive Coordinator... And a QB would be nice too.

How does he make it sub-par ? He doesn't even play

Because Sanchez has had to play the entire season knowing that Jesus is ready to take his job at any moment. If your backup was Browning Nagle, I could see not being nervous. But a cult favorite of the country's Christian Fundamentalists? That's just too much pressure.

The Redskins never make it to that SB without Rypien. Not a chance. He was unreal. Research and look at his stats in Regular Season and Playoffs. You can say his career is irrelevant but, he was terrific that year. Dilfer does not get to be compared to #11 for that SB year.

Rypien had a good year because his offensive line had a truly outstanding year, probably one of the best ever in the NFL. _I_ could have stood back there, taken all day, and thrown the football. He simply wasn't touched that year.

I think Rex lives in a land where "offense draws crowds and defense wins games." He thinks his QB is irrelevant, and a good looking kid that might draw some girls to the game is as good a distraction as any. Also, he makes a good scapegoat in the event that his defense doesn't win him anything.
