08:28 AM ET 12.07 | In the case of Bret Bielema bolting Madison, Barry Alvarez took the high road. Alvarez admitted being "totally caught by surprise" when Bielema came to his New York City hotel room Tuesday morning and told him about an offer to move to the Southeastern Conference and take over the struggling Razorbacks. ... "I said, 'You're not telling me you're going to visit with the Arkansas people. You've already taken the job,'" Alvarez recounted. "The answer was yes." Alvarez noted matter-of-factly that "no one contacted me for permission" -- a breach of gentleman's protocol by Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long -- but insisted that he didn't feel betrayed by the lack of a heads-up from Bielema. "I know the business," Alvarez said.

Breach of gentleman's protocol.....that's a good one. Alvarez just wanted a shot to offer a raise. I definitely wouldn't like new job offers to have to go by my current boss. Makes no sense to me.

You know, I went to the press conference on Weds and had a chance to visit with BB and his wife afgterwards........he did well in the presser. I came away much more-impressed than I was going in. He said oll the right things.

Base concerns are still there....can he recruit, can you win at smash-mouth football if you are Arky and playing in the SEC W.....but I'll give him the benifit of the doubt at the start.

Time will tell if this was a bad fit or a good hire....bottom line, I'll still support my Hogs

FWIW, who gives a czhit if we asked permission to talk? That's life...you think Miles asked permission to talk to us?

It's all about the $$$...if you can get fired as a HC 2 yrs after a national championship, you have the right to chase the $$ anyway/anywhere you can.....loyality is dead and CFB is a a big business now, deal with it

Wife is unbelievable......

Still not convinced, just learning to deal with it. Like the discipline he's gonna bring, tired of players getting arrested.

Recruited 51 kids to Wisky from Fla in the last 4 years....didn't know that. 3 of his starting secondary this yr at Wisky were from Texas.......didn't know that.

Tenpenny's gonna flip back to Arky. We needed a complete change from BP, we got it. Took less $$ to have more to spend on assistants......like that.

Time will tell, not officially on the BB bandwagon, but still on the Arky/WPS bandwagon.

Glad to hear it, WPS. It sux mightily to have your school coached by a guy you just cannot stand. It's bad enough to get to that point after year(s) of poor performance, to have that from the get-go would just be awful.

Not surprising.

Jeff Long is one of the bigger pieces of crap in college athletics

Still think, as you've said before, they need to take the aTm approach. Spread it around and make those big guys make a play in space.

OK...I'll bite.

Why do you think so? He was nationally applauded for the way he handled the BP fiasco. He has little old Arky opertating as only one of about 25 profitable athletic programs in America, and the profit margin % of total reveune (or efficiency ratio) was third-best nationally. The department he was in charge of showed a $68 million profit in 2011.

He continues to be a target of other schools needing an AD & has turned down numerous jobs in the last 18-months.

What, in your mind defines him as "a piece of crap"?
