Owners have 'the hill we will die on'

08:36 AM ET 12.07 | The lockout saw perhaps its most bizarre hour unfold on Thursday in New York. Early Thursday evening at a Manhattan hotel, at the same time NHL players' union boss Don Fehr preached optimism that the gap between owners and players was "certainly not unbridgeable," league deputy commissioner Bill Daly left a phone message for Fehr's brother, Steve, saying that the players' latest proposal was unacceptable, this week's meetings were over, and all new elements in the NHL's most recent offer were off the table. ... A cancelled season is most certainly a strong possibility, particularly considering Daly's characterization of the NHL's desire to limit player contract lengths to five years as "the hill we will die on."

What's wrong with 7 year contracts? I think that's more than reasonable.

So when the management apologists wake up, maybe one of them can explain how this becomes the players' fault that the owners offer absurd contracts. While not my cup of tea, the idea is to get what you can...DiPietro, Luongo...they have what...15 year deals? this isn't exactly Dryden, Tretiak, or Tony Esposito we're talking about here. But because of greed, jealousy, envy (or the other 4 of them...KDF mentioned envy, so I figured i would too) the owners sign these milksops to long term deals...Now the players have to protect them from temselves?
here's hoping that maybe they do die on that hill....starting with Bettman and daly

This is the time that SID THE KID needs to speak the **** UP!
"Look guys, seven years is not unreasonable. I am willing to take a seven year contract from my ten. Let's play some hockey!"
Jerk-Off! That's right, called Sid a jerk-off. Write it down...date and all!

they all need to speak up, but yes...Sid needs to first. You want to be the face of the league? right now you're the face of nothing.
Right with you my friend

Yep, yep.
Sid would go out there and play for $50.00 BUCKS a night at this point. He really doesn't need the money, let's be honest. However, I realize he and others have to think of the other players, not just themselves. But seven years? Not unreasonable.

One thing we may disagree on thought....he didn't WANT to be the face of the league, but he is, and he needs to do the right thing for the fans/sport, and I KNOW he doesn't want to play in Switzerland, or wherever the hell!

If the owners want to limit contracts to five years -- then only offer contracts for up to five years. I am lost on why that seems so complicated.

DING DING DING.
This is what is hillarious. They are willing to die on a hill that only they can create. It makes no sense. You know why there are 15 year deals, because owners/gm's want to sign guys that long. If you don't want to, then DON'T. If other's do, who cares. It's not like the Dipietro deal worked out so good....

All the marginals losing the best salary years they will ever see by a country mile are the guys who need to speak up.
They can swing things if they choose to.

If one of them did, maybe others would follow.

Basically the owners are telling the players, "Do not make us offer contracts longer than five years". With that type of logic, I have to wonder how did these guys become owners in the first place?

By not setting a limit we will idiots like Dolan, Snyder, Wang (is he still the owner of the Isle?) the owners of the Canucks and Wild doing stupid things in a desperate attempt to win the Cup. These contracts have the unintended consequence of creating false value for future negotiations by spurring foolish bidding wars for top players. If you want to sign a top free agent you know you will have to overpay in dollars and length of contract because some idiot in NY or Philly is offering a ridiculous term.
I'm not ready to blame all of the owners for the actions of a half dozen (or so) of them

Excuse me if I'm wrong here but didn't Tyler Seguin sign a six year contract just minutes before the lockout and now the owner that signed him wants 5 year contracts? Isn't that just a bit two-faced?
Canuck eh?

Nothing wrong with 7 year deals just so long as they can't be frontloaded. Secondly a team under the knew offer can sign their own FA's to 7 year deals
