John Calipari runs slumping Wildcats through 'Camp Cal'

10:12 AM ET 12.08 | Kentucky coach John Calipari hopes "Camp Cal" yields a better-conditioned and more committed team. Two days in, the intense workouts have at least gotten the Wildcats' attention. With no early risers on the roster, Kentucky players have found it harder to awake for the 7 a.m. workouts than the exercises. Not that basic training has been easy, what with strength coach Ray "Rock" Oliver screaming at them as they run. Then comes afternoon practice with Calipari, who instituted the routine after Tuesday's victory over Samford. Despite a rout of the Bulldogs, he was unhappy with the Wildcats' second-half effort and vowed to change their attitude and fitness. Kentucky's response Saturday against Portland (3-5) could determine whether Camp Cal lasts a few days or continues into the Christmas break. What's important is that everyone is on board with the program.

I know, she is somewhere in Texas though, coming back to Jacksonville tomorrow. I do not know if they have mule deer there or not, I know of none in Kentucky or Florida.

The estimated Texas Whitetail Deer population of close to 4-million deer dwarfs the Mule Deer population due to their limited range. Mule Deer populations hit an all-time low in 1945. There were so few Mule Deer in Texas that they were not considered to be in Texas anymore. Due to conservation efforts by Texas Parks And Wildlife, Texas hunting groups and landowners, the Mule Deer has made a miraculous comeback. Today, the Mule Deer population in Texas ranges from 180,000 deer during dry season to approximately 280,000 deer during the rest of the year. Mule Deer are found primarily in Western Texas and Northwestern Texas, specifically the Marfa Basin of the Trans-Pecos, Panhandle and the Western Edwards Plateau.

The biggest deer in TX tend to be along the Mexico border. Mulies reside in west TX for the most part. The backgdrop in the pic could be from either.

Sad truth:
If you're willing to spend $1K to $3K and are lucky enough to find an opening on a lease you can hunt an average deer in TX.
If you're willing to spend $5K you can hunt some really nice deer between San Antonio and Mexico.
If you have $10K to $20K you can hunt the huge ranches along the Mexico border and put a real trophy on the wall. Finding room on these ranches is a crapshoot - lots of corporate types bring clients here.

Never hunted in Texas. We would go to the Rockies in New Mexico and hunt...no leases, federal land...

Was always a bonding trip for my Dad, brother and me.
Remember the time Dad forgot to bring enough cigarettes...we were gone for 5 days so the last few days were a bit tough...guy with a gun quitting smoking...LOL

I'll bet it's in the Davis Mountain/Big Bend area....from Van Horn down to Presidio/Sanderson.

We call them creasote but I'm not sure that's the real name. Some are also just stubby looking mesquite bushes if they are in sand and don't have good root depth.

Desert kids can't climb trees...and dogs can't mark 'em cause they ain't any.
Road from El Paso, TX to Alamogordo, NM is about 88 miles with nothing but a wide spot in the road called Orogrande, NM. Sits next to White Sands Missle Range and the desert training area used by Fort Bliss and international troops training there.
There is one cottonwood tree next to the highway. Some soldiers spent some time and erected a beautiful sign that says, "Orogrande National Forest."
